Christmas and New Year in Niseko 2026-27: What to Book, and by When
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/11/04

Christmas and New Year is the most expensive week of the year in Niseko, and the one that sells out first. Book in this order: accommodation, then the dinners you care about, then your airport transfer and kids' ski school, then rental gear, and lift passes last. Accommodation goes the day your dates are set; lift passes you can buy the night before you ski. It is late to start hunting for the Christmas week in October, but the rooms you can still choose shrink by the day. For the months-out picture, start with how far in advance to book Niseko accommodation.
How busy, and how much more expensive?
This week moves on school holidays around the world, not on the snow. Niseko United's lift passes are at peak price from 24 December 2026 to 28 February 2027 (Niseko United, checked 13 October 2026), and that first day is where Japan's New Year holiday meets the Australian summer break. Within that peak, the New Year week climbs higher still: in the rate sheet AYA Niseko released in spring 2026, a two-bedroom for four cost ¥177,700 a night in mid-December but ¥336,000 from 19 December to 3 January, close to double (AYA Niseko rate sheet (PDF)). On top of that, Kutchan (Hirafu and Hanazono) charges a 3% accommodation tax that includes the Hokkaido tax (Kutchan Town). To see the same room priced week by week, go to Niseko accommodation prices 2026-27.

Count back from the deadline
In a busy week, the deadline is not "while rooms are still open" but "the day the full amount becomes non-refundable." Waiting until it sells out is too late, so this is the order I always lock in.
- Accommodation (first): the day your dates are set. New Year rooms start selling out months ahead
- The dinners that matter: the small reservation counters in Hirafu book two to three months out. The 31 December and New Year's Day evenings go first
- Airport transfer and kids' ski school: the same week as your room. Peak buses and private transfers both run out
- Rental gear: early. The right ski and boot sizes go first
- Lift passes: no rush. You can buy them on your phone by the night before
Accommodation: the day your dates are set
What sells out first in the New Year week is not "Niseko" as a whole, but the rooms you can walk to the lifts from in Hirafu, and the three and four-bedrooms that families and groups need. So the move is to book when your dates firm up, not to wait for "something" to open. Check one thing before you pay: the cancellation terms. Niseko condominiums refund less readily than city hotels. The Niseko Company takes a 20% non-refundable deposit at booking, and from 60 days before arrival nothing comes back (The Niseko Company, checked 5 October 2026). Arrive on 24 December and that 60-day mark is 25 October. If your dates or leave could still move, I would pay a little more for a free-cancellation rate for the peace of mind.
The dinners that matter come right after the room
In Hirafu over New Year, the places that take bookings fill weeks to months ahead, and the places that don't fill another way: in peak week a queue forms outside the door before 6pm, and if you arrive late you can miss dinner entirely. You don't need to lock down every evening. Secure the one night you really want, and leave the rest open to decide on the day. That approach, plus how to phone a restaurant, cancellation fees and dress codes, is in when to book dinner in Niseko's peak weeks. If calling in Japanese worries you, the fastest route is to have your accommodation's front desk call for you.
Transfer, ski school, rental, lift passes
Airport transfers go from the peak departures first. The reservation buses between New Chitose Airport and Hirafu are the Hokkaido Resort Liner (adult ¥6,000 one way, child ¥5,000) and the White Liner (adult ¥7,000, child ¥5,000); on both, a child under 3 not using a seat rides free (2026-27, checked 5 October 2026. Hokkaido Access Network / White Liner). With small children, a lot of luggage, or a late landing, a private transfer or taxi to your door is easier. For the family cost comparison, see getting from the airport to Niseko with a family.
Kids' ski school comes right after the room. At NISS in Hanazono, only full-day lessons can be pre-booked for the peak period (NISS). When I worked as a ski instructor, the morning meeting points were packed with kids over the New Year week and lessons were full early. Groups cap their numbers, so lock a child's place especially early. Rental gear goes by size, so arranging skis, boots and outerwear once the room is set makes your arrival day easier.
Lift passes are the one thing you don't need to rush. Both the all-mountain pass and the Hirafu-Hanazono pass are a few percent cheaper bought online by the night before, and you skip the window queue. The peak all-mountain adult day pass is ¥13,500 at the window, about 5% less online on average. To decide which pass for how many days, use the Niseko lift pass guide 2026-27.
What is different over New Year: closures and the 1 January commute
The resort and lifts usually run through the New Year holiday, but some shops, clinics and town offices close or cut their hours. On 1 January the free town shuttle and night bus can run on a different timetable, so check the day's schedule for your first few days. The 2026-27 winter timetables come out around November. A New Year countdown or fireworks can be on or off, and in a different place, from one year to the next. Don't assume it is happening: confirm the year's details with the resort or the Kutchan tourism association before you come. Whether clinics are open over the holiday varies by area, so arrange travel insurance and keep the nearest emergency contact to hand.
FAQ
What do I book first for Christmas and New Year in Niseko?
Accommodation first, the day your dates are set. Then the dinners that matter, your airport transfer and kids' ski school, rental gear, and lift passes last. Lift passes you can buy the night before you ski.
How far ahead should I book accommodation for New Year?
For the New Year week, as soon as your dates are set, ideally half a year out. You can still search from October, but the rooms you can choose shrink by the day. Looking in central Kutchan or shifting your dates by a few days keeps options open.
How expensive is Christmas and New Year accommodation?
It is the most expensive week. In AYA Niseko's published rates, a two-bedroom cost ¥177,700 a night in mid-December but ¥336,000 from 19 December to 3 January (2026-27). A 3% accommodation tax is added on top.
Do lift passes sell out if I don't buy early?
No. The all-mountain pass can be bought online even on the day you ski. The peak adult day pass is ¥13,500 at the window, about 5% less online. Rush the room, the dinner and the transfer instead.
Is there a countdown or fireworks over New Year?
It varies by year. Don't assume it is on: confirm the year's details and location with the resort or the Kutchan tourism association.
