New Chitose to Niseko with Kids: Airport Bus, Taxi, Private Transfer or Rental Car? (2026-27 Prices)
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/10/07

Small kids, big bags: what's the easiest way from New Chitose Airport to Niseko? If you touch down by about 18:30 (allowing for immigration and baggage claim) and your luggage fits one bag per person, take a booked airport bus (low ¥20,000s one way for a family of four); if you have lots of luggage, very young children or a later landing, take a taxi or private transfer to your door (¥40,000 to ¥75,000 per vehicle), and only rent a car if you're used to snow and want one for the whole stay.
This is written for a family of four from Singapore (two adults, two kids aged 3 to 11). Fares and times are each operator's published 2026–27 figures, checked on 5 October 2026. For the big picture of every route, see how to get from New Chitose Airport to Niseko; this one sticks to comparing costs for families. What does it cost one way for a family of four?
Here's one way for two adults and two children. Every option takes about two and a half hours in winter, and longer when it snows.
| Option | Family of 4, one way | To your door | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hokkaido Resort Liner | ¥22,000 | Set bus stops | Ski gear + 1 bag |
| White Liner | ¥24,000 (¥19,200 if booked online in October) | Set bus stops | 1 ski set + 1 bag each |
| Fixed-fare taxi (5 seats) | ¥38,200 + tolls | Yes | What the car holds |
| Private transfer (4–8 people) | ¥75,000 | Yes | What the car holds |
| Rental car (6 days) | about ¥120,000 + tolls and fuel | You drive | What the car holds |
The bus is cheap, but it ties you to a luggage count and a timetable. Taxis and transfers cost more, but you can carry a sleeping child straight to the front door.
Airport bus: landing by 18:30, one bag each
Two booked bus services run between the airport and Hirafu. The Hokkaido Resort Liner runs 1 December 2026 to 30 March 2027 (the last 19:30 departure starts on 7 December), costs ¥6,000 one way for adults and ¥5,000 for children aged 3 to 11, and takes about 2 hours 30 to 40 minutes to Hirafu's No. 1 car park. Its evening airport departures are 17:50 and the last one at 19:30, which reaching the Hirafu car park at 22:25 (Hokkaido Access Network). The White Liner runs 12 December to 23 March with six airport departures a day from 9:45 to 15:45, at ¥7,000 for adults and ¥5,000 for children aged 3 to 12, with 20% off when you book online in October (White Liner). Both must be booked, and children under 3 who don't use a seat ride free. The Resort Liner is basically for guests of hotels in its drop-off areas, so check that your accommodation is one of its stops before you book.
Luggage is where families get stuck. The White Liner allows one ski or snowboard set plus one other bag per person, and the Hokkaido Resort Liner also limits the hold to ski gear plus one more item, with skis in a proper bag or case. If you're bringing a stroller, count it too and mention it when you book.
Flight delays are handled differently. The White Liner will move you to a same-day or next-day bus for ¥500 per person if seats are free. The Hokkaido Resort Liner may adjust its departure time, but if you miss it, rebooking or other transport is at your own cost. The White Liner's last bus leaves at 15:45, and the Resort Liner's last pickup at the international terminal is 19:40. Baggage claim, and immigration on an international flight, take time, so if you touch down after 18:30, read can you get to Niseko the same day if you land at night? first.
Taxi or private transfer: small kids, lots of bags, late arrival
These two take you to the door, and nobody counts your bags. Sapporo MK Taxi's fixed airport fare to Niseko is ¥38,200 for an Alphard (5 seats) and ¥52,400 for a HiAce (9 seats), tolls extra, with 20% added between 22:00 and 5:00 (Sapporo MK Taxi, published fares checked 5 October 2026). SkyExpress, a private transfer listed by the accommodation company Niseko Central, charges ¥75,000 one way for its 4–8 person vehicle and ¥57,000 for 1–3 people in winter 2026–27 (12 December to 28 February), plus 15% between 21:00 and 6:00 (Niseko Central).
Child seats are something you have to check yourself. Japan requires child seats for children under 6, but taxis, buses and other passenger transport vehicles are exempt (Kanagawa Prefectural Police). That only means you're allowed to ride without one. For two and a half hours over a mountain pass, give your children's ages and weights when you book and ask whether a seat can be fitted. SkyExpress says it can provide seats for ages 0 to 7.
Read the booking terms closely. SkyExpress needs at least 72 hours' notice (two weeks recommended), and cancellation costs 50% from 8 to 5 days out and 100% from 4 days out. A delayed or cancelled flight also counts as 100%, and if your pickup runs more than 30 minutes late, waiting costs ¥10,000 an hour.
Rental car: used to snow, and want a car all week
Singapore drives on the left like Japan and is a Geneva Convention country, so an international driving permit issued in Singapore lets you drive here (Tokyo Metropolitan Police). At Toyota Rent a Lease Sapporo, a Noah-class van (seats 7 to 8) costs ¥22,990 for the first 24 hours in the winter rate period (1 November to 25 December and 4 January to 23 April) and ¥16,940 for each extra day. Studless winter tyres are fitted free on every car from 1 November to 5 May, 4WD is ¥1,650 per 24 hours, a child seat is ¥1,650 per rental and a junior seat ¥1,100 (Toyota Rent a Lease Sapporo, options). Six days in January with 4WD and two seats comes to about ¥120,000, before tolls and fuel.
The road is the real issue. The route from the airport crosses a mountain pass, and the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau warns that driving in bad weather carries risks such as getting stranded (Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau). After a long flight, driving on snow for the first time, with kids in the back: I wouldn't do it. If you still want the car, check the pass on Northern Road Navi before you leave, and confirm your accommodation has parking. More on winter driving is in Before Your First Niseko Trip.
JR: cheap, but hard with kids and big bags
By train, you take the Rapid or Special Rapid Airport train to Otaru and change to a local Hakodate Line train to Kutchan. A route planner gives about three hours, ¥3,100 for adults and ¥1,550 for children (Ekitan, checked 5 October 2026). From Kutchan Station you still need a bus or taxi to Hirafu. With kids and ski bags, that's a train, a change and then a bus, which is a lot to ask of a family.
You can send bags ahead. Yamato Transport has counters on the domestic terminal's 1st floor (receive and send) and 2nd floor (send), and the international terminal's 3rd floor (send) (Yamato Transport). Ask at the counter when bags will reach your Niseko accommodation, and keep the first night's clothes and the kids' things with you.
Still unsure? Decide in this order
- Touching down after 18:30: taxi or private transfer. Once you've collected your bags, you'll miss the Resort Liner's last bus (19:30, or 19:40 from the international terminal)
- More than one bag each, or a child under 6: taxi or private transfer. Ask about seats when you book
- Touching down by 18:30 with light bags: airport bus
- Used to snow and want to drive to onsen or Kutchan during the stay: rental car
Once you're in Hirafu, the free loop bus (1 December to 31 March in 2025–26, per the Kutchan Tourism Association) and the resort shuttles cover most trips. How far you can get without a car is in can you get around Niseko without a car?, and the whole-trip budget is in how much does a Niseko ski trip cost?
