Tokyo to Niseko: Plane vs Shinkansen, Travel Time, Cost and Luggage (2026-27)
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/10/07

Leave Tokyo Station around 7am, fly out of Haneda and change onto the airport bus at New Chitose, and you're in Hirafu at 1:15pm. By Shinkansen, the 8:18am Hayabusa gets you to Kutchan Station at 4:16pm, about eight hours with two changes, so for a family with kids and big bags, the plane plus the airport bus is the better fit.
This is for families who spend a few days in Tokyo first and then head to Niseko. Train and flight times are from the Ekitan journey planner, searched for a departure on Thursday 10 December 2026. Bus times and fares are the operators' published 2026-27 figures. Both were checked on 5 October 2026. If you haven't decided how to get from New Chitose to your accommodation yet, read Bus, private transfer or rental car from New Chitose: which suits you? first, because it changes which flight you should book.
Plane vs Shinkansen, side by side from Tokyo Station
| Plane + airport bus | Shinkansen + local trains | |
|---|---|---|
| Leave Tokyo Station | 7:08am | 8:18am |
| Arrive | Hirafu 1:15pm | Kutchan Station 4:16pm |
| Changes | Monorail, plane, bus | Shinkansen, limited express, local train |
| One adult, one way | Airfare + ¥7,000 bus | ¥27,220 (reserved seats) |
| Big bags | Checked in at the airport | Carried through every change |
The plane example is Skymark flight 705, leaving Haneda at 8:15am and landing at New Chitose at 9:55am, then the 10:45am White Liner bus to the Hirafu Welcome Center (Ekitan, White Liner). In Ekitan's example you reach Haneda at 7:43am, only 32 minutes before take-off, so with kids and bags to check in, catch a train one or two earlier. The Shinkansen example is the Hayabusa 5 to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto at 12:15pm, the Hokuto 11 limited express to Oshamambe at 1:43pm, then a local train to Kutchan at 4:16pm. From Kutchan Station you still need a bus or taxi up to Hirafu. You arrive about three hours later by train, and the luggage is just as big a difference. Fly, and your big bags go in at Haneda and come out at New Chitose. Take the train, and you're carrying kids and suitcases across a winter platform to change at Oshamambe, then lifting it all off again at Kutchan.
By plane: a morning flight from Haneda, Hirafu by early afternoon
Four airlines fly Haneda to New Chitose: ANA, JAL, Air Do and Skymark. The October 2026 timetable runs from 6:20am to 9:30pm, and flights take 1 hour 30 to 40 minutes (Ekitan flight timetable). Tokyo Station to Haneda Terminal 1 is about 35 minutes via the monorail, a much shorter morning than getting out to Narita. One-way adult fares on weekdays in December 2026 start from ¥8,750 for early discount fares (as shown on Airtrip, fees extra), while the undiscounted fare on Ekitan's Skymark 705 example is ¥37,910, a range of about four times (Airtrip, checked 5 October 2026). Skymark, the airline in the example, checks up to 20kg per person free and accepts skis up to 280cm long (Skymark). Many low-cost fares out of Narita charge for every checked bag, so compare prices with the whole family's luggage added in.
Pick your flight around the airport bus. The White Liner runs from 12 December to 23 March, with six departures a day from New Chitose between 9:45am and 3:45pm. It leaves from the domestic terminal, so off a Haneda flight you just walk over. Adults pay ¥7,000 and children ¥5,000, with 20% off for web bookings made in October. If no flight gets you there in time for the 3:45pm bus, read Landing at New Chitose at night: can you still reach Niseko the same day? and decide between a private transfer and an airport hotel before you go.
By Shinkansen: a full day, with an hour's wait at Oshamambe
By train, it's just under four hours from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, about 70 minutes on the limited express to Oshamambe, then about an hour and a half on the local train to Kutchan. An adult ticket is ¥27,220 (¥14,410 fare, ¥11,130 Shinkansen reserved seat, ¥1,680 limited express reserved seat). Primary-school-age children pay roughly half, so two adults and two kids come to around ¥80,000. The weak link is Oshamambe. Counting JR Hokkaido's timetable (October 2026 edition data), only four trains a day leave Oshamambe for Kutchan: 6:05am, 2:45pm, 4:38pm and 8:02pm (JR Hokkaido). Even on the Hayabusa 5 you wait about an hour there, and if you miss that train the next one is two hours later.
The Japan Rail Pass for overseas visitors costs ¥50,000 for adults and ¥25,000 for children aged 6 to 11 for seven days (Japan Rail Pass). A return ticket between Tokyo and Kutchan is ¥54,440 for an adult, so the pass comes out slightly cheaper if you go up and back by Shinkansen within seven days, and individual tickets are cheaper if you only ride one way. It's a lovely day if you want to watch the view turn white out the window, or if one of your kids hates flying. If you'd rather not haul several suitcases through two changes, it isn't for you.
Send the skis and suitcases ahead from Tokyo
Whichever way you go, sending the big bags to your accommodation while you're still in Tokyo makes travel day a different thing. Yamato Transport's ski delivery (Ski Takkyubin) arrives by the day before you need it if you send it at least two days ahead (three for some areas). Skis and snowboards can't be sent from convenience stores, so take them to a Yamato office or ask whether your Tokyo hotel's front desk will handle it (Yamato Transport). At the cash rates in force from 1 October 2025, Kanto to Hokkaido costs ¥5,220 for a ski bag and ¥3,630 for a size-160 suitcase (Yamato rate table).
Before you send anything, check that your accommodation accepts deliveries and will hold bags that arrive the day before you do. Keep the first night's clothes and the kids' things in a carry-on. Still deciding where to stay? Your delivery address comes first, and Where should you stay in Niseko? compares the areas. For the trip as a whole, How much does a Niseko ski trip cost? helps you build the budget.
Going home: work back from the airport bus
On the way home, choose your flight from the bus timetable. The White Liner leaves Hirafu at 7:50am, 9:30am, 11am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm, reaching New Chitose two and a half hours later, between 10:20am and 6pm. I'd take the 11am bus (at the airport by 1:30pm) and book a Haneda flight from 3pm onwards. Hokkaido's regional development bureau warns that bad weather on winter mountain roads can leave vehicles stranded (Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau), so don't cut your connection fine.
Going back by Shinkansen, five trains a day run from Kutchan towards Oshamambe: 6:22am, 12:20pm, 4:55pm, 7:14pm and 8:58pm (JR Hokkaido). Take the 12:20pm, change at Oshamambe and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, and you're at Tokyo Station at 8:32pm (Ekitan, searched for Tuesday 15 December). On the day of an international flight home, only use the Shinkansen if your schedule has room to spare.
Which one?
- Small kids or lots of luggage: a morning flight from Haneda to New Chitose, then the airport bus or a transfer to Hirafu
- You want every possible day on the snow: fly. On a morning flight you can sort out rentals the afternoon you arrive
- The journey is part of the trip and changes don't bother you: Shinkansen. Connect the Hayabusa 5 to the 2:45pm train from Oshamambe
- Either way: send skis and suitcases from Tokyo to your accommodation
