Landing at New Chitose at Night: Can You Get to Niseko the Same Day? Last Buses, Late Transfers and Airport Hotels (2026-27)

Landing at New Chitose at 9pm, can you still get to Niseko the same night? Only with a private transfer booked in advance. The last scheduled airport bus leaves at 7:30pm again in 2026-27, so for a family it is cheaper, and you skip the snowy night roads, to sleep at the airport or in Sapporo and take a bus the next morning.

This is for families flying in from Hong Kong whose only option is a flight that lands after 9pm. Times and prices are the 2026-27 figures on each operator's official site, checked on 5 October 2026. With a night in between, you reach Niseko around midday the next day. For how to spend that first afternoon, see What do you do on the day a family arrives?, which walks through it hour by hour.

Land at 9pm and the airport buses have already gone

Two companies run bookable buses between the airport and Hirafu. Hokkaido Resort Liner's last bus in 2026-27 leaves the domestic terminal at 7:30pm and the international terminal at 7:40pm, reaching Hirafu No. 1 car park at 10:25pm (the route runs 1 December to 30 March, and this 7:30pm last bus starts on 7 December; Hokkaido Access Network). White Liner runs 12 December to 23 March, and its last airport departure is 3:45pm (White Liner). Touch down at 9pm and you've missed both.

Arriving on an international flight means immigration and baggage reclaim first. Add the wait for ski bags, and I'd allow an hour before you're out of the terminal. Both bus companies recommend leaving at least 90 minutes between an international arrival and your bus (Hokkaido Access Network, White Liner). Then it's around two and a half hours on winter roads, so you reach Hirafu somewhere between 12:30 and 1am. Plenty of places have closed their front desk by then, so ask your accommodation in advance whether a midnight check-in works, or you may arrive to a locked door.

If you go that night, pre-book a private transfer

If you have to arrive the same night, a private transfer is the way. Take SkyExpress, offered through Niseko accommodation company Niseko Central: for winter 2026-27 (12 December to 28 February), New Chitose to Niseko in a 4–8 seat vehicle is ¥75,000 one way. Pick-ups and drop-offs between 9pm and 6am carry a 15% late-night surcharge, which makes it ¥86,250 for a family landing after 9pm (Niseko Central).

Also check what happens if your flight is late. Under the same terms, a departure delayed by 30 minutes or more is charged ¥10,000 per hour of waiting, non-refundable. Evening flights are the ones most likely to carry delays from earlier in the day. When you book, confirm the delay charges and whether child seats are available. Some accommodation runs its own transfers for guests, so ask yours too.

Don't drive the snowy roads at night yourself

Heading off that night in a rental car is the option I'd most like you to avoid. The road from the airport to Niseko crosses mountain passes. White Liner even stops for a break at Bifue Pass on the way, and Hokkaido's regional development bureau warns that driving in bad weather carries risks such as getting stranded (Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau). Even drivers used to snow find two and a half hours on an unfamiliar pass, after a long flight, in the dark, hard going. I'd say no.

If you're driving, leave the next morning in daylight and check the passes on Kita no Michi Navi first. Once you're in Niseko in winter, the buses will get you around. How that works is in Can you get around Niseko without a car?

Stay at the airport or in Sapporo?

If you're heading straight to Niseko with kids, I'd stay at the airport. New Chitose has two hotels connected to the terminals: Portom International Hokkaido on the 4th floor of the international terminal (Portom), and Air Terminal Hotel on the 3rd floor of the domestic terminal (Air Terminal Hotel). You can get from the arrivals hall to your room without going outside, which keeps the carry short when a child has fallen asleep on you.

The next morning, the early buses leave from the domestic terminal. White Liner's first is 9:45am, and Hokkaido Resort Liner's first is 10:00am (into Hirafu at 12:45pm). Resort Liner only starts stopping at the international terminal with the 2:00pm departure. If you stayed on the international side, you can walk to the domestic terminal through the connecting passage. Portom puts it at about 960m, around 12 minutes on foot.

Sapporo makes sense if you want a day of food and shopping there first. JR's Rapid Airport train takes 37 minutes at its fastest and costs ¥1,230 for adults, and the last train from the airport is the 11:21pm special rapid (JR Hokkaido). The catch: from Sapporo to Niseko, Chuo Bus's Express Niseko takes around three hours, and only the summer 2026 timetable is out so far (Hokkaido Chuo Bus). If you want to reach Niseko early the next day, the airport gets you there sooner.

Comparing costs for a family of four

Take two adults and two children. The 9pm private transfer, as above, is ¥86,250. The next morning's Hokkaido Resort Liner is ¥6,000 per adult and ¥5,000 per child, so ¥22,000; White Liner is ¥7,000 and ¥5,000, so ¥24,000. White Liner gives 20% off for web bookings made in October, which brings it down to ¥19,200.

That's a gap of just over ¥60,000. Put one night at an airport hotel next to that number, and staying usually comes out cheaper. The downside is losing half a day in Niseko. Assume the next afternoon goes on check-in and rentals, start skiing on day three, and the plan stops feeling rushed.

The buses have delay rules too. White Liner will move you to a later bus that day or the next for ¥500 per person, if there are seats. Hokkaido Resort Liner may adjust the departure when flights run late, but if you still can't board, rebooking or other transport is at your own cost. Booking the next morning's bus means a late flight stops being your problem. Roads can be slow on snowy mornings, so check Niseko's weather and road conditions before you set off to get a sense of when you'll arrive.

Decide how you'll travel the next morning

Pick bus or transfer for the next morning based on headcount and luggage. On White Liner, each passenger can bring one set of ski or snowboard gear and one other bag. If your family of four has more than that, a daytime transfer is easier. The buses come with conditions too. A White Liner service is cancelled if bookings fall short of six people, and Hokkaido Resort Liner is, as a rule, only for guests staying at hotels in the drop-off areas (Hokkaido Access Network). Both need advance booking, so lock in your seats when you book your flights and accommodation, and check then that your place qualifies.
