Where to Stay in Niseko: Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, Annupuri or Kutchan? (2026-27)

Bringing the kids to Niseko for the first time and stuck between Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, Annupuri and Kutchan? If in doubt, stay in Hirafu close to a lift; pick Niseko Village for short mornings, Hanazono for childcare and kids' ski lessons under one roof, Kutchan near the station for a week or more of self-catering, and Annupuri for a quiet, adults-only trip.

Booking sites list "Upper Hirafu" and "Hanazono" side by side, but the map alone won't tell you how far apart they feel. Two things decide it: how far you'll walk to the lift in ski boots, and where you'll eat dinner. Prices are official 2026-27 figures (checked 5 October 2026); buses use the 2025-26 timetable as a guide, since the 2026-27 one isn't out yet. Four resorts, five places to stay

Four resorts sit on one mountain, Niseko Annupuri: Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono, sold together as Niseko United. The 2026-27 adult 1-day all-mountain pass is ¥13,500 in peak season (24 December to 28 February), ¥12,600 in regular season (12 to 23 December and 1 to 22 March), and ¥8,800 in early season (28 November to 11 December) and spring (23 March to 4 April) (Niseko United). In 2025-26 the same pass covered the Niseko United Shuttle between the resorts (shuttle guide). You can ski all four from anywhere, so what you're really choosing is where you head back to at night.

Hirafu: first time? Stay close to a lift

Hirafu has plenty of places to stay, restaurants and ski schools, and one catch: the hill. On the GSI map, the Hirafu Welcome Center sits at about 319 m and the main road at the bottom of the slope at about 260 m, roughly a 20-storey difference (GSI Maps, measured by Niseko Hub in October 2026). A local tip: "5 minutes to the lift" is also 5 minutes uphill at 4 pm, in boots, carrying your kid's skis. With children, pick a place level with the lift or above it.

The closer to a lift, the pricier, and those go first. Further down are chalets and whole houses that work out cheaper split between two families, but you'll ride the free loop bus up each morning (1 December to 31 March in 2025-26, Kutchan Tourism Association). If you'll eat out a lot, settle dinner the same week you book the room: do you need to book restaurants in Niseko?

Hanazono: childcare and ski school in one building

Next door to Hirafu, Hanazono is built around Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono, with few other places to stay, and it's quiet. Hanazono 308 at the base holds both childcare for kids up to 4 (Niseko Kids Club, from ¥28,000 a day in 2026-27, Niseko Kids Club) and check-in for English-language group lessons for ages 3 to 14 (NISS, from ¥32,000 per child, NISS).

The weak spot is dinner. After a meal in Hirafu, during the 2025-26 night-skiing period (13 December to 22 March) the last Niseko United Shuttle to Hanazono left the Welcome Center at 20:50. After that, it's a taxi or nothing (Niseko Bus 2025-26 winter timetable). Hanazono's free shuttle runs from Hanazono to Hirafu, with the last one leaving at 19:28 (17:28 outside the night-skiing period) (HANAZONO).

Niseko Village: out the door and onto the snow

Hilton Niseko Village, Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, The Green Leaf Niseko Village and MOXY Niseko Village, among others, stand at the bottom of the runs (Niseko United accommodation page). The walk in boots is short, and a midday rest back in the room is easy. Niseko Village Kids Club takes 18 months to 9 years and has coaches who speak English and Mandarin, but in 2026-27 it runs only until 28 February (Niseko Village).

Dinner is almost all inside the hotels and the Village. After a meal in Hirafu, in the same period the last Niseko United Shuttle to Hilton Niseko Village left the Welcome Center at 20:00. After that, it's a taxi (Niseko Bus 2025-26 winter timetable).

Annupuri: quiet, for adults who ski

The west side of the mountain, mostly pensions and small lodges. Niseko United describes Niseko Northern Resort An'nupuri at the base as a ski-in ski-out hotel. Few restaurants are within walking distance at night, and I'd point confident adult skiers here rather than a first trip with kids. To get around, Niseko town's loop bus ran from 29 November to 22 March in 2025-26, at ¥100 a ride (Niseko Town).

Kutchan station area: a week or more, cooking for yourselves

Around the station you'll find supermarkets and izakaya, and rooms are easier on the budget. In winter 2025-26 the bus from the station to Hirafu took about 30 minutes and cost ¥500, and the last daytime bus back from Hirafu left at 15:37 (Niseko Bus Kutchan line). In the evening, the free Kutchan Night bus ran from 1 December to 31 March, 17:00 to 22:30, with the last bus from Hirafu at 21:45. From 20 December to 28 February one non-stop service a day was added, leaving the Welcome Center at 17:30 (Kutchan Tourism Association timetable). For three or four nights without a car, Hirafu is easier.

What does a night cost? Published rates as a guide

Checked 5 October 2026. Hotels in Hanazono and Annupuri don't publish rate tables, and prices move by date.

• Hirafu: a 2-bedroom at AYA Niseko (4 guests, breakfast and taxes included) is ¥72,060 for 6 to 11 December, ¥177,700 for 12 to 18 December, and ¥336,000 for 19 December to 3 January (AYA Niseko rate sheet)

In AYA's case, New Year costs more than four times early December. The snow is only just building then, but the first half of Singapore's year-end school holidays (21 November to 31 December in 2026, Ministry of Education Singapore) lines up with weeks when both rooms and lift passes are cheaper. Accommodation tax is 3% of the room rate in Kutchan town (Hirafu and Hanazono), and Niseko town (the Village and Annupuri) moves to 3% from 1 November 2026, both including Hokkaido's tax (Kutchan Town, Niseko Town).
