Shopping for Winter in Kutchan: Where and When to Buy Kerosene, Snow Tools and Winter Tyres (2026-27)
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/11/07

In Kutchan and Niseko, the time to shop for winter is October, before the snow falls. Buy your winter tyres, snow tools or kerosene after the first snow and you hit one of three problems: empty shelves, a queue for tyre fitting, or a higher price. The first snow in Kutchan averages around 20 October (JMA normals), so in real terms you have a few weeks left. The full run of jobs is in What to get ready before the snow: a winter-prep checklist; here we go deep on just the shopping — when, where and how much.
Prices and stock move by shop and by year, so this piece is built from official sources and our own checks as of 15 October 2026. Confirm the latest with the shop or each company's price page. Having grown up in Hokkaido, my own read is that everyone moves at once not on the average date of 20 October, but the morning after the first real dump. Tyre shops and hardware stores fill up that weekend, so treating "the weekend before the first snow" as your deadline keeps it simple. First, the whole picture.

Winter tyres: book the swap in October
The most urgent item is winter tyres. The tyre maker Sumitomo Rubber (Dunlop) puts the swap at "roughly one month before the average first snow," and its November 2025 notice gives Sapporo a changeover window of 1–17 October with an average first snow of 1 November (Dunlop). Inland Kutchan sees snow earlier than Sapporo, so moving within October is the safe call here. Rush in after it has snowed and the swap becomes a multi-day wait, with fitting fees that tend to climb in the busy weeks.
Choosing studless tyres does not need to be hard. The major Japanese brands perform much alike, so if you are unsure, go with the factory size for your car and something made within the last three to four years. Before you grab a cheap used or online set, check the tread and the build year. The Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) explains that once the tread drops below half of new (about 5mm) it is no longer fit for winter, and that the "platform" indicator touching the road means the tyre is finished (JAF). Beyond tyres, the pre-winter check for your battery and washer fluid is in Winter car care in Niseko and Kutchan.
What to do:
- Book the swap at a tyre shop within October (November is crowded)
- Check any tyres you already own: tread (5mm or more) and build year (within 3–4 years)
- Run about 100km to bed in a fresh set before you take it onto snow
Snow tools: at the hardware store before the first snow
Snow tools also get bought before the first snow. Around Kutchan and Niseko, DCM Kutchan and Komeri Kutchan carry the main range, and from early October a snow-clearing aisle appears near the registers. The usual line-up is the snow-dump (the "mama-san dump"), the pusher, the square shovel and the pointed shovel, and a snow-dump runs roughly 3,000–6,000 yen (our check; it varies by shop and size). Once the first real snow lands, the choice of sizes and colours thins out fast, and popular snow-dumps can sell out.
You do not need the whole set at once, but get the snow-dump and the square shovel before the first snow. Which tool suits which job is laid out in Which snow-clearing tools should you buy?. You can buy online, but you cannot judge shaft length and weight without holding one, so choose in the shop if you can. A shaft whose tip reaches somewhere between your shoulder and the length of your arm when you stand is the gentlest on your back.
A local tip: you do not need the perfect, complete kit. Just three things need to be in hand before the first snow: winter tyres, a snow-dump and non-slip boots. Without them, the morning after it falls, moving at all gets hard.
Kerosene: how you buy it changes the price
With kerosene, how you buy it changes the price. There are two routes: delivery, and buying it yourself. Houses and newer units often have a yard tank (200–490 litres) on a standing contract with a kerosene shop or the co-op; for a flat or a small amount, you fill an 18-litre jerry can at a hardware store or petrol station and carry it yourself. As a guide, delivered kerosene in Hokkaido was about 2,790 yen per 18 litres in early October 2026, moving within a band of roughly 2,280–2,790 yen over the past year (METI retail survey tally, as of 5 October 2026). The co-op lists 159 yen per litre in Sapporo as of 1 October 2026 (tax included, outdoor tank) (Enecoop).
If you buy it yourself, self-service petrol stations are often cheaper, and sale days bring it down further. Because crude oil and the exchange rate move it week to week, the sure way before you sign a contract or stock up is to compare the unit price and delivery terms at a nearby kerosene shop, the co-op and a station. A full 18-litre can weighs around 15kg, and carrying it over snow is hard work, so get two or three cans before the season and keep the store near your entrance. How to choose the heating itself and cut the bill is in Winter heating and bills in Niseko.
What to do:
- In a house, at move-in ask the tank's capacity and which kerosene shop the previous tenant used
- If you buy your own, use a self-service station and sale days, and get two or three jerry cans early
- In a high-oil-price year, compare the unit price of delivery against buying your own once
Other winter shopping (de-icer, boots, gas canisters)
The rest is small but missed when absent. De-icer (calcium chloride) works on ice at the entrance and path, and hardware stores sell it by the bag. Non-slip winter boots and warm gloves get picked over once snow is down, so buy within October. A portable gas stove and canisters are your backup when a blizzard knocks out power and both heating and hot water stop, so a boxful is reassuring. Preparing for the outage and water cut-off itself is covered separately in Preparing for winter power and water outages.
FAQ
When should I swap to winter tyres in Kutchan?
Before the first snow, booking a tyre shop within October. Makers advise "roughly one month before the average first snow," and Sapporo's changeover window is 1–17 October. Kutchan sees snow earlier than Sapporo, so once it has settled, the swap turns into a queue.
Where and when do I buy snow tools?
At a hardware store such as DCM Kutchan or Komeri Kutchan, within October. After the first snow, sizes and stock drop sharply. Secure the snow-dump and the square shovel first, and choose the shaft length by holding it in the shop.
Where is kerosene cheapest?
By delivery from a kerosene shop or the co-op, or, for a small amount, bought yourself at a hardware store or self-service station. In early October 2026, delivered kerosene in Hokkaido was about 2,790 yen per 18 litres. The price moves weekly, so compare the unit price at a nearby shop, the co-op and a station, and have jerry cans ready before the season.
Can I still buy after the snow comes?
For tyre fitting and popular snow tools, sometimes not in time. After the first snow, tyre shops run a queue and the snow-dumps at hardware stores sell out. Kerosene you can still buy, but you add the work of carrying a heavy can over snow. Get the shopping you can done by the weekend before the first snow.
