Stay in Kutchan or Hirafu? Last Buses, Room Prices and When Kutchan Makes Sense (2026-27)
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/10/09

Will you regret staying in Kutchan because it's far from the slopes? For a group of friends staying a week or more and cooking for themselves, a room near Kutchan Station works fine; the people who regret it are first-timers on a short trip without a car, and anyone who wants late nights in Hirafu. The deciding factor is the bus timetable more than the room rate: in winter 2025-26 the last daytime bus from Hirafu back to Kutchan Station left at 15:37, and the last free night bus out of Hirafu left at 21:45.
The 2026-27 winter timetables weren't out when I checked (5 October 2026), so the bus times and dates here are the official 2025-26 figures, as a guide. The 2025-26 night bus details were announced on 25 November 2025. For how much room rates move by week, see Which weeks cost the most to stay in Niseko?
| Hirafu | Around Kutchan Station | |

| Rooms | Hotels, condos, pensions | Business hotels, guesthouses, dorms |
| Getting home at night | Walk | Free night bus or taxi |
How far apart are Kutchan and Hirafu?
Hirafu is the ski village at the foot of the Grand Hirafu slopes. Kutchan is the town around JR Kutchan Station, where people in the area live and shop. Both have a Kutchan Town address, but you can't walk between them. On Niseko Bus's 2025-26 winter timetable, the 7:50 from JR Kutchan Station reached the Hirafu Welcome Centre at 8:20, about 30 minutes (Niseko Bus Kutchan Line, winter 2025-26). By car it's 10 to 15 minutes, according to Smart Hotel Kutchan by the station (Smart Hotel Kutchan).
Because it's one town, the accommodation tax is the same too. From stays on 1 April 2026, Kutchan Town charges 3% of the room rate, Hokkaido's tax included (Kutchan Town). Tax won't separate them, so what you compare is the room rate plus the money and time you spend getting to the slopes each day.
Getting around each day: bus in the morning, timetable home
By day, you ride the Niseko Bus Kutchan Line. In winter 2025-26 it ran 6 times a day from JR Kutchan Station towards Hirafu (7:50 to 16:40), and 4 times a day from the Hirafu Welcome Centre back to the station (8:40, 11:02, 13:25 and 15:37). The fare from the station to the Welcome Centre was ¥500, and contactless cards work (Niseko Bus Kutchan Line, winter 2025-26). The All-Mountain Pass covers the shuttle between the resorts, not the Kutchan Line, which needs a fare (Niseko United). New timetables go up on Niseko Bus.
From late afternoon, you rely on the free Kutchan Night Bus. In 2025-26 it ran from 1 December to 31 March (as planned), 17:00 to 22:30, about every 45 minutes, with the last bus at 21:45 from both the Welcome Centre and Kutchan Station. There were no buses from 19:15 to 20:15, and each bus held about 20 people (Kutchan Tourism Association route map and timetable). From 20 December to 28 February, one non-stop bus a day was added, leaving the Welcome Centre at 17:30 and reaching Kutchan Station at 18:00 (Kutchan Tourism Association, Hirafu Free Shuttle). One suitcase per person.
The awkward hour is between the last daytime bus at 15:37 and the night bus starting at 17:00. Decide each day: head back straight after skiing on the daytime bus, or stay in Hirafu for dinner and take the night bus. Miss the last night bus and it's a taxi or a car home. For moving between the resorts as well, see Can you get around Niseko without a car?
How much do rooms and transport cost?
Rooms around Kutchan Station are usually easier on the budget than at the slopes. For example, Smart Hotel Kutchan's 2026-2027 winter season plan started at ¥20,340 for two people in one room, no meals (as of 5 October 2026, Travelko). It's a 1-minute walk from the station, with private rooms, dorms and an annex with kitchens. Hirafu prices change by date, so you can't know the gap until you line up the same week and the same group size.
Add the transport to the comparison. Four people for seven days, taking the ¥500 bus each morning and the free night bus home, comes to ¥3,500 each, ¥14,000 for the group. Take the daytime bus home as well and it doubles to ¥28,000. If the room price gap is bigger than that, Kutchan wins; if it's smaller, it's worth hunting for a cheap room in Hirafu. For that, see How to pick cheap accommodation in Niseko.
Trips where Kutchan is easy to regret
The trip most likely to regret it is a first visit of three or four nights without a car. Timing every morning around a bus while carrying gear makes those 30 minutes feel expensive on a short trip. With small children, the ski school meeting point in Hirafu is easier still. Which part of Hirafu to choose, from the top of the hill to the bottom, is in Where to stay in Hirafu.
If you want late nights in Hirafu's bars, you'll be watching the last night bus. Taxis can take a long time to come in the evening, on heavy snow days and over New Year and Lunar New Year (6 February in 2027). Ask for a fare estimate when you book. Booking your ride home as soon as you reach the restaurant saves standing in the snow.
Choosing Kutchan for a stay of a week or more
The longer you stay, the more Kutchan pays off. There are supermarkets and drugstores, and with a kitchen you can cook breakfast and a few dinners, which adds up over two or three weeks. The Kutchan Night Bus stops outside the Max Valu and Lucky supermarkets in Kutchan, so you can hop off and shop on the way home.
Pick a place a few minutes' walk from JR Kutchan Station or a Kutchan Line stop. In deep snow, a five-minute walk on the map becomes ten. The night bus ends at the station, so close to the station is the safest bet. Carrying skis on the bus every day is tiring, so if you rent near the slopes, ask whether you can leave your gear there overnight.
A car makes Kutchan easier still. Smart Hotel Kutchan says it has 80 parking spaces. With a car, you choose whichever resort has the best snow that day. But winter roads here mean snow, ice and days when you can't see ahead. If you've never driven on snow, ask yourself whether you can drive that road every day before you pick Kutchan for the car. If you're coming by train, check the JR Hakodate Line times on JR Hokkaido, and a room by the station gets even more useful.
The order to decide in
First, ask whether your evenings fit around the last night bus. If they do and you're staying a week or more, go with the Kutchan Station area; if you want late nights every night and have no car, lean towards Hirafu. Next, open today's Niseko accommodation comparison, enter your check-in date and group size, line up Kutchan and Hirafu side by side, and cut the list to two or three. Finally, add ¥14,000 to ¥28,000 of transport to the Kutchan rooms and compare. If Hanazono or the Village are also on your list, Where to stay in Niseko compares the bases first.
