Getting Around Niseko Without a Car: Shuttles, Free Buses and Taxis (Winter 2026-27)

Getting Around Niseko Without a Car: Shuttles, Free Buses and Taxis (Winter 2026-27)

Short answer first. You can get around Niseko in winter without a car. There's a shuttle linking the four resorts, a free bus looping around Hirafu, and buses between Kutchan town and Hirafu. But don't underestimate the evenings or the taxis — some times of day have few buses, and on some nights you won't get a cab.

  • Between resorts: the Niseko United Shuttle. Ride it with an All-Mountain Pass
  • Around Hirafu: a free shuttle runs through the winter
  • Hirafu to Hanazono: there's a free shuttle
  • Kutchan town to Hirafu: a regular bus by day, and a free bus on winter nights
  • Watch out for: late evenings, and taxis over New Year and Lunar New Year

Timetables for the 2026–27 season usually come out around November. This guide uses the 2025–26 season as a reference.

Can you do Niseko without a car?

Yes. In winter, not driving is often easier. Snowy roads, clearing the car in the morning, hunting for parking — if you're not used to them, they wear you down.

There's one condition: stay somewhere you can walk to a bus stop or restaurants. Get that right and you won't miss a car.

How to choose where to stay is in Where to Stay in Niseko.

Niseko's buses: the five you'll use in winter

Niseko United Shuttle: linking the four resorts

This bus links Annupuri, Niseko Village, Hirafu and Hanazono. It's run by Niseko Bus. In 2025–26 it ran from 29 November to 5 April, with evening services from 13 December to 22 March (Niseko Bus).

If you have an All-Mountain Pass, you can ride it. Without one, you pay a fare.

It's the bus for "let's try Annupuri today."

Hirafu free shuttle: around Hirafu

A free bus running several loops around Hirafu. It starts at the Welcome Centre and covers upper, middle and lower Hirafu and the east side.

Hirafu is built on a hill. Use it for the uphill walk home and you'll see why it matters.

Hirafu–Hanazono shuttle

A free bus between the Hirafu Welcome Centre and Hanazono. Use it on days you ski Hanazono or have a lesson there.

Buses between Kutchan town and Hirafu

By day, a regular Niseko Bus service runs between JR Kutchan Station and Hirafu. The All-Mountain Pass isn't valid on it.

On winter nights, a free night bus runs between Kutchan town and Hirafu. Handy when you want izakaya or ramen in Kutchan.

Niseko Circuit Bus: the Niseko Town side

A bus looping through Annupuri, Niseko Village and Niseko Town, promoted by Niseko Town (Niseko Town). If you're staying at Annupuri or the Village, this is your ride.

Can you get a taxi?

Honestly, don't count on it too much.

Niseko doesn't have many taxis. In the evening, on heavy snow days, and over New Year and Lunar New Year, you may call and wait a long time.

What to do:

  • If you're taking a taxi home from dinner, book the ride back as soon as you arrive at the restaurant
  • Sort out how you'll get home at the same time as you book the restaurant
  • If it's walkable, wrapping up warm and walking can be quicker

A local tip: pick your dinner spot by whether you can get home from it. Getting there by bus, then finding the last bus has gone — that's the most common mistake.

From the airport to Niseko

From New Chitose Airport, you can come by bus, private transfer or JR. See getting to Niseko from New Chitose Airport for the details.

If you have lots of luggage, kids, or a late arrival, booking a transfer to your door makes the first day much easier.

Tips for getting around without a car

  • Keep a photo of the timetable. Having it on your phone beats reading it at the bus stop
  • Check the last bus first. Look up the ride home before the ride out
  • The All-Mountain Pass includes the shuttle. If you'll ski all four resorts, it pays off for getting around too
  • Carry a little cash. Payment methods differ between buses
  • Expect delays on snowy days. Buses don't always keep to the timetable
