How to Get to Niseko from Hong Kong: Flights to Sapporo, Then on to the Snow (2026-27)

From Hong Kong, you fly to New Chitose Airport (Sapporo) in about 4.5 to 5 hours, then ride a reserved bus or a private transfer to Hirafu in another 2.5 to 3 hours. Niseko has no airport of its own, so everyone comes in through New Chitose, Hokkaido's main gateway, and finishes the trip by road. Some flights leave Hong Kong at night and some land around midday, and which one you take changes how you spend your first day. The ride from the airport costs and takes different amounts depending on how you do it, so skim How to get from New Chitose to Niseko (bus, transfer, rental car compared) first and the rest of this will go quicker.

How you fly from Hong Kong to Niseko

Direct flights run from Hong Kong International to New Chitose on Hong Kong Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Greater Bay Airlines and others. Cathay lists the flight time at about 4 hours 45 minutes (Cathay Pacific). Winter pushes demand up with ski travellers, and airlines tend to add flights. Greater Bay Airlines has announced a second daily flight for the peak from 12 December 2026 to 15 January 2027, on 737 MAX 9 aircraft (AeroRoutes). The days and dates each airline flies shift from season to season, though, so confirm the flights and times on the airline's own site.

If a direct flight is sold out or too expensive, a connection is the other option. Changing in Tokyo (Narita or Haneda), Taipei or Seoul on the way to New Chitose opens up more flights, but it adds a layover and one more round of checking in your bags, skis included. If you want to know why New Chitose and not Hakodate or Okadama, I put the reasons in What's the closest airport to Niseko?

International flights land at the international terminal. The ski bus counters are usually on the domestic terminal side, a 10 to 15 minute walk along the connecting passage. Immigration and the wait for ski bags make your timing hard to predict, so give yourself room after you land before any connection.

Four ways from New Chitose to Niseko

Once you land, the choice comes down to four: a reserved bus, a private transfer, train plus bus, or a rental car. Each has a trade-off, and the right one depends on your group size, your luggage and when you arrive. Here's the whole picture at a glance (all 2026-27 published figures; times and services change by season, so confirm with each operator).

OptionTime to HirafuOne-way fare (2026-27)Best for

Private transferAbout 2.5 to 3 hoursFrom ¥57,000 for 1–3 (varies by vehicle)Families, groups, late arrivals
Train plus busDepends on connectionsAirport to Kutchan ¥3,100 plus bus/taxiLight packers who don't mind changing
Rental carAbout 3 hours (mountain passes)Depends on the carDrivers used to snow and mountain roads
  • Reserved bus (the easiest): White Liner runs six departures a day from the airport, 9:45 to 15:45 between 12 December 2026 and 23 March, reaching Hirafu in about 2.5 hours; adult ¥7,000, child ¥5,000 (web bookings made in October are 20% off, so ¥5,600 for an adult and ¥4,000 for a child aged 3 to 12; White Liner, checked 15 October). Hokkaido Resort Liner runs 1 December to 30 March, reaching the Hirafu No.1 car park in about 2.5 hours on the direct run (buses that rest at Rusutsu take a little longer) and carrying on to Niseko Village and Annupuri (adult ¥6,000, child ¥5,000; Hokkaido Access Network, checked 15 October). Both take reservations only.
  • Private transfer (good for families and groups): SkyExpress in winter (12 December 2026 to 28 February 2027) prices by vehicle and capacity: the MAX3 for 1 to 3 people is ¥57,000, the MAX8 for 4 to 8 is ¥75,000, and the MAX15 for 9 to 15 is ¥105,000 (the premium Alphard Select is ¥75,000 even for 1 to 3). A 15% surcharge applies to pickups between 21:00 and 6:00 (Niseko Central, checked 15 October). A family with two ski bags and a suitcase each has an easier time with a transfer than with a bus.
  • Train plus bus: The JR Rapid Airport reaches Otaru in about 75 minutes, then a local Hakodate Line train takes about another 75 minutes to Kutchan, and from Kutchan to Hirafu it's a bus or a taxi. The airport-to-Kutchan fare is ¥3,100 (Ekitan, checked 5 October). Local trains run every one to two hours, so missing a connection means a long wait.
  • Rental car: The road from the airport to Niseko crosses mountain passes. I wouldn't suggest it unless you're used to snow and mountain driving. Check conditions on Kita-no-Michi Navi before you set off.

Skis, luggage, and landing after dark

Travelling with skis and suitcases shapes which option works. A reserved bus is easy but caps your luggage: White Liner allows one ski or snowboard set plus one other bag per person. A family with two ski bags and a suitcase each is safer booking a private transfer from the start, with nothing left behind.

If your flight lands at night, decide before you go whether you can reach Niseko the same day. The last departure from the airport is 15:45 for White Liner. Hokkaido Resort Liner runs later buses, but the exact last departure changes by season, so check the official timetable before you book (it decides whether a night arrival works). If you can't make the last bus, the realistic choices are a pre-booked private transfer, or a night at the airport or in Sapporo before heading over in the morning. The last buses and the airport-area hotels are laid out in Landing at New Chitose at night: can you reach Niseko the same day?

What to book, and when

The order is flights, then accommodation, then the airport transfer. Flights and rooms fill first and cost most around New Year and Lunar New Year (6 February in 2027). If your ski dates fall in that window, lock them in months ahead. Reserved buses and private transfers both need booking in advance, and a bus departure with fewer than six bookings can be cancelled seven days out, so once your flight is set, sort the transfer early too.

Where you stay changes your bus drop-off and your daily routine. If you're torn between Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri, settle the area first with Where to stay in Niseko, then match your flights and transfer to it. Planning in that order saves a lot of untangling later.

FAQ

Are there direct flights from Hong Kong to Niseko?

There are direct flights from Hong Kong International to New Chitose Airport (Sapporo) on Hong Kong Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Greater Bay Airlines and others, and airlines tend to add flights in winter. The flight takes about 4.5 to 5 hours. The days and dates each airline flies change by season, so check the current schedule on the airline's site.

How long does New Chitose to Niseko take?

About 2.5 hours to Hirafu by reserved bus (both White Liner and Hokkaido Resort Liner list about 2.5 hours on the direct run, 2026-27). Train plus bus and a rental car are also possible, but connections and snowy roads make the timing harder to predict.

Roughly how much does it cost?

A reserved bus is ¥6,000 to ¥7,000 for an adult and ¥5,000 for a child, one way (2026-27). A private transfer with SkyExpress in winter runs by vehicle and capacity: from ¥57,000 for 1 to 3 people, ¥75,000 for 4 to 8, and ¥105,000 for 9 to 15. By train, the airport to Kutchan is ¥3,100, with a separate bus or taxi from there to Hirafu.

Are skis a problem on the flight and the transfer?

Each airline sets its own size, weight and count rules for checked baggage, so confirm how skis and snowboards are handled when you book. Reserved buses from the airport cap how many sets you can bring, so a family with two ski bags and a suitcase each is safer with a private transfer.

Can I still reach Niseko on a late-night arrival?

Yes, if you make the last bus. The last departure from the airport is 15:45 for White Liner. Hokkaido Resort Liner runs later buses, but the exact last departure changes by season, so check the official timetable. If you can't make it, pre-book a private transfer or spend a night at the airport or in Sapporo.
