Rusutsu Resort Guide: Three Mountains, Tree Runs, Lift Passes and How to Ski It From Niseko (2026-27)
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/10/16

Rusutsu Resort is a three-mountain ski area in central Hokkaido, with 37 runs spread over 42km and a name built on its tree skiing. It sits about an hour by road from Niseko, close enough that plenty of people ski both on one trip. This guide pulls together the three mountains and the runs, the powder, the gondolas, the lift passes, how to get there from the airport, where you sleep, and the family side, all from official numbers. If you're weighing Rusutsu against Niseko as a base, read Niseko vs Rusutsu: which is better? first.
Three mountains, one ski area
Rusutsu spreads 37 runs and 42km across three peaks: West Mt. (715m), East Mt. (868m) and Mt. Isola (994m). The longest run is the Isola Grand at 3.5km, a single top-to-bottom descent (Rusutsu Resort, checked 13 October 2026). Gondolas link the peaks, and the lift network runs to four gondolas, seven quad lifts and seven pair lifts, moving 30,728 people an hour. The way to ski Rusutsu is to move between West, East and Isola rather than stay on one face.
The tree runs Rusutsu is known for
Rusutsu's reputation abroad rests on these tree runs. The Isola A and B courses let you ride through Hokkaido's birch forest; Heavenly Canyon and Spirit are advanced runs left ungroomed; and Super East is a steep pitch of up to 40 degrees (Rusutsu Resort). Within the resort boundary you can drop off the marked runs at your own risk, and the draw is how much lift-accessed powder sits right in the trees. Trees and gaps hide under the snow, though, so don't push it on a flat-light day or alone, and always follow patrol and the ropes.
Powder and how much snow
For snow, Rusutsu's own figures put average snowfall at about 13m a season and the average snow base at 2.95m (Rusutsu Resort). On the numbers alone that isn't far off Niseko. The sites and years measured differ, so rather than crown a winner, treat it as "both get plenty of snow; the real split is crowds and run layout." If you're torn, pick on logistics rather than snow depth.
Lift passes for 2026-27, and the Epic Pass five days
An adult one-day pass for 2026-27 is ¥16,700 at the counter or ¥13,200 online in the regular season (19 December 2026 to 14 March 2027). Children aged 4 to 12 pay ¥8,300 counter or ¥6,400 online, and seniors 65+ pay ¥12,500 or ¥9,800. A five-day adult pass is ¥65,000 at the counter. The early weeks are cheaper: a one-day adult pass is ¥7,900 from 28 November to 11 December, and ¥10,500 from 12 to 18 December and again in spring (15 to 31 March) (Rusutsu Resort, checked 13 October 2026). An Epic Pass gets you five consecutive days at Rusutsu for 2026/27 at no extra cost, with no blackout dates; note the My Epic mobile pass won't work on Rusutsu's lifts, so bring the physical card and photo ID to the window (Epic Pass). If you're choosing a pass, our guide to the Epic vs Ikon pass for Niseko walks through it.
From the airport, and a day trip from Niseko
From New Chitose Airport, the direct BIGRUNS BUS reaches Rusutsu in about 120 minutes. In winter it runs from the airport from 28 November 2026 to 30 March 2027; the fare is the same for adults and children, ¥5,000 one way booked online or ¥5,500 on the day, and anyone aged 4 and up needs a seat (book by midnight seven days ahead; Rusutsu Resort). You can also day-trip from Niseko. In 2025-26 a day-trip bus left Hirafu at 8:30, reached Rusutsu at 9:15 and returned at 16:30 (¥9,000 round trip, about 45 minutes, 40 seats a day, booking closed at 15:00 the day before), running 3 January to 28 February. The 2026-27 service wasn't announced as of 13 October 2026 (Rusutsu Resort). If you're unsure which airport to fly into, see which airport is closest to Niseko?
Staying at Rusutsu: hotel, pool and the amusement park
What Rusutsu does well is let a whole day happen inside the resort. The indoor heated pool (with a wave pool and an aqua coaster) is free for overnight guests and open until 22:00 daily. Indoors there's also a two-storey carousel billed as one of the world's biggest, plus a games arcade, which is a useful bolt-hole on a bad-weather day. For families there's a nursery charged by the hour and the Samurai Kids ski lessons in English, split into ages 4 to 7 and 8 to 14 (Rusutsu Resort). Walking out to a different dinner each night is harder here, so meals centre on the hotel restaurants.
The best time to go (season dates)
Read off the pass tiers, the season splits into early (from 28 November), regular (19 December to 14 March) and spring (15 to 31 March). For deep powder, aim at January and February; for quieter runs and longer days, the spring prices from mid-March are the sweet spot. New Year and Lunar New Year (6 February 2027) get busy, and rooms and buses fill early. We compare snow and crowds month by month in when is the best time to visit Niseko?
FAQ
Can you day-trip to Rusutsu from Niseko?
Yes. In 2025-26 a day-trip bus left Hirafu at 8:30 and reached Rusutsu in about 45 minutes (¥9,000 round trip, 40 seats, booking closed at 15:00 the day before), running 3 January to 28 February. Check the Rusutsu Resort site for the 2026-27 service. The Niseko all-mountain pass doesn't work there, so buy a separate Rusutsu ticket for the day.
How much is a Rusutsu lift pass?
For 2026-27, an adult one-day pass is ¥16,700 at the counter or ¥13,200 online in the regular season. Children aged 4 to 12 pay ¥8,300 counter or ¥6,400 online, and seniors 65+ pay ¥12,500 or ¥9,800. Booking online the day before is the cheaper way.
Does the Epic Pass work at Rusutsu?
Yes. For 2026/27 the Epic Pass covers five consecutive days at Rusutsu at no extra cost, with no blackout dates. The one catch: the My Epic mobile pass won't scan on Rusutsu's lifts, so bring the physical card and photo ID to the ticket window.
Is Rusutsu OK for beginners and families?
Yes. There are gentle runs, a nursery, and Samurai Kids ski lessons in English split by age (4 to 7 and 8 to 14). An indoor pool and games arcade mean a bad-weather or non-ski day can still happen inside the resort.
How long is it from New Chitose Airport to Rusutsu?
About 120 minutes on the direct BIGRUNS BUS. One way is ¥5,000 booked online (anyone 4 and up needs a seat). In winter the airport service runs from 28 November 2026 to 30 March 2027.
