Niseko vs Rusutsu: Which Is Better? Snow, Runs, Lift Passes, Airport Access and How to Ski Both (2026-27)
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/10/06

From Hirafu, Rusutsu was about 45 minutes away on Rusutsu Resort's day-trip bus last season (2025-26). For a family trip, the way to get the best of both is to stay in Niseko, where you can walk out to dinner every night, and give Rusutsu one day; if you'd rather keep the pool, childcare and ski lessons all inside one hotel, stay at Rusutsu instead.
This is for families who've decided on a Hokkaido ski trip and are stuck choosing between Niseko and Rusutsu. Prices and dates are the 2026-27 figures published on each official site, checked on 5 October 2026. Snow: hard to split them
People tend to assume Niseko wins on snow, but the official numbers barely separate them. Niseko United reported 1,450cm at Hirafu's mid-mountain station (850m) in 2021/22 (Niseko United) and 1,400cm in 2022/23 (Niseko United). Rusutsu Resort puts its average at about 13m a season (Rusutsu Resort official blog, 2021). They're measured in different places and different years, so my reading is that both get plenty of snow and the decision comes down to other things.
Terrain: Niseko goes long, Rusutsu goes wide
Niseko is four resorts side by side on one mountain, Mt Niseko Annupuri. Grand Hirafu on its own has 22 courses, a top elevation of 1,200m, 940m of vertical and a longest run of 5,300m (Grand Hirafu), so Niseko is where you get the long, top-to-bottom descents. Rusutsu spreads 37 courses, 42km in total, over three peaks: West (715m), East (868m) and Isola (994m), with the 3.5km Isola Grand as its longest (Rusutsu Resort official blog, 2021). Hopping between peaks for variety is Rusutsu; one big slope you can ride for a long time is Niseko.
Lift passes: about the same if you buy online
At Rusutsu, an adult 1-day ticket in regular season (19 December 2026 to 14 March 2027) is ¥16,700 at the window and ¥13,200 online (Rusutsu Resort). Niseko's All-Mountain Pass in peak season (24 December to 28 February) is ¥13,500 at the window (Niseko United) and ¥12,800 online (Grand Hirafu). For two adults and two kids aged 4 to 12, one day online comes to ¥39,200 at Rusutsu and ¥40,800 at Niseko. Buy Rusutsu at the window and it's ¥50,000, so get it online by the day before.
Five-day adult passes are close too: ¥65,000 at Rusutsu, ¥65,500 for Niseko's All-Mountain (window). The gap opens in early December, which overlaps with Singapore's year-end school holidays (21 November to 31 December 2026, Ministry of Education). From 12 to 18 December, Rusutsu's adult day ticket is ¥10,500 (window only), while Niseko's All-Mountain that week is the regular ¥12,600. Some years not many runs are open by then, though, so buy one day at a time after you've seen the snow.
With an Epic Pass, you get five consecutive free days at Rusutsu in 2026/27 (Epic Pass). Niseko is on the Ikon Pass (Ikon Pass).
From the airport, Rusutsu is 30 minutes closer
Rusutsu Resort's direct BIGRUNS BUS takes about 120 minutes from New Chitose Airport with winter departures from the airport running 28 November 2026 to 30 March 2027 (Rusutsu Resort). It's ¥5,000 one way for adults and children alike (online, booked at least 7 days ahead). For Niseko, the White Liner runs direct to Hirafu from 12 December 2026 to 23 March 2027 in about 2 hours 30 minutes, at ¥7,000 for adults and ¥5,000 for ages 3 to 12 one way, with 15% off web bookings (20% off in October) (White Liner). Comparing online prices, one way for a family of four is ¥20,000 to Rusutsu and ¥20,400 to Niseko, or ¥19,200 to Niseko if you book in October. If your flight lands late, see Landing at New Chitose at night: can you still reach Niseko?
What changes with kids?
Rusutsu's strength is that the kids' whole day works without leaving the hotel. The indoor heated pool is free for overnight guests and open until 10pm daily (Rusutsu Resort). The nursery takes children from age 1 up to pre-school at ¥2,000 an hour, booked by 6pm the day before, closed on Tuesdays (Rusutsu Resort). Samurai Kids, the ski lessons for ages 4 to 14, are taught in English and cost ¥16,000 to ¥20,000 for a half day; kids need to speak English (Rusutsu Resort). The trade-off is that dinner mostly means the hotel restaurants.
Niseko's strength is choice. Hirafu has plenty of places within walking distance, so you can eat somewhere different every night, and several schools teach in English. The weak spots are the crowds and prices in January and February: dinner bookings get hard and rooms cost more. To find a quieter week, see When is the best time to visit Niseko?
Staying in Niseko, day-tripping to Rusutsu
To ski both, stay in Niseko and go to Rusutsu for one day. In 2025-26, Rusutsu Resort ran the Rusutsu Powder Day Trip bus from 3 January to 28 February: it left the Hirafu Welcome Center at 8:30, reached Rusutsu at 9:15, and came back at 16:30 (Rusutsu Resort). The return fare was ¥9,000 for adults and children alike, with 40 seats a day, booked online by 3pm the day before. As of 5 October, the 2026-27 service hasn't been announced.
For a family of four, that's ¥36,000 in bus fares plus ¥39,200 for Rusutsu lift tickets online, about ¥75,200 for the day. A car keeps transport costs down, but the drive is a mountain road in winter. If you're driving, check closures and road surface on Kita no Michi Navi before you leave, and take the bus if you're not used to snow. Niseko's All-Mountain Pass doesn't work at Rusutsu, so buy that day's Rusutsu ticket online.
The days I'd pick are the morning after an overnight snowfall, or a weekend when Niseko looks busy. The bus closes bookings at 3pm the day before, so you decide around lunchtime the day before, off the forecast. How to read it is in How do you spot a powder day in Niseko?
So where should you stay?
Stay in Niseko if your family… - wants a different place for dinner every night - wants a big slope you can ride top to bottom - would like to try Rusutsu for a day
Stay at Rusutsu if your family… - has small children and wants the pool, childcare and lessons inside the hotel - wants the shortest possible trip from the airport - has an Epic Pass
Once you've chosen Niseko, the next question is where: Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, Annupuri or Kutchan. Whether you can walk to dinner and how close you are to the kids' ski school meeting point will decide it. The differences are laid out in Where should you stay in Niseko?
FAQ
Niseko or Rusutsu: which is better?
Niseko for families who want to walk out to dinner and anyone who wants long runs on a big slope. Rusutsu for families who want the pool, childcare and lessons inside the hotel. On snow, the official figures put both at roughly 13 to 14m a season, so there's no big gap.
Can I day-trip to Rusutsu from Niseko?
Yes. In 2025-26 a day-trip bus ran from the Hirafu Welcome Center (¥9,000 return, about 45 minutes). Check Rusutsu Resort's official site for 2026-27. You can drive, but it's a winter mountain road, so check road conditions before you go.
How much is a Rusutsu lift ticket?
For 2026-27, an adult 1-day ticket in regular season is ¥16,700 at the window or ¥13,200 online. Ages 4 to 12 pay ¥8,300 at the window or ¥6,400 online, and children 3 and under ski free.
Can I use the Niseko All-Mountain Pass at Rusutsu?
No. Rusutsu is a separate resort and needs its own lift ticket.
Which is closer to New Chitose Airport?
Rusutsu. The direct bus takes about 120 minutes to Rusutsu and about 2 hours 30 minutes to Niseko (Hirafu).
