Your Family's First Day in Niseko, Hour by Hour: Airport, Rentals, Onsen and Dinner

On the day your family lands in Niseko, don't ski: pick up the rentals, soak in an onsen and eat dinner near your hotel, in that order, and the kids will wake up on day two with energy left. Even if you touch down at New Chitose at 9am, the bus gets you into Hirafu after 1pm, which leaves only about four hours of afternoon.

The example here is a family of four from Singapore, with two primary-school kids, landing on an international flight at 9am. Fares and times are the official 2026-27 figures, checked on 5 October 2026 (where only last season's numbers exist, I say so). 9:00 From landing to the bus

The White Liner, a direct bus between the airport and Hirafu, runs from 12 December to 23 March in 2026-27, with six departures a day from the airport between 9:45 and 15:45, taking about 2 hours 30 minutes. The operator recommends at least 45 minutes to connect from a domestic flight and 90 minutes from an international one. Landing internationally at 9am, the 10:45 is the realistic bus once you've cleared immigration and collected bags, and it reaches the Hirafu Welcome Center around 13:15 (White Liner). The bus leaves from the domestic terminal, so allow time to walk across.

¥7,000 per adult and ¥5,000 per child (ages 3–12) is the phone and same-day counter fare; web bookings get 15% off (¥5,950 per adult). That makes ¥20,400 one way for a family of four, or ¥19,200 with the 20% discount on web bookings made in October. The other operator, Hokkaido Resort Liner, charges ¥6,000 per adult and ¥5,000 per child (ages 3–11); buses that stop at Rusutsu take about 2 hours 45 minutes to Hirafu Parking Lot No. 1 (Hokkaido Access Network). The White Liner makes one rest stop on the way, so feed the kids a light lunch at the airport and the ride goes far more smoothly.

13:15 In Hirafu, drop the bags first

Check-in times vary by property, and arriving just after lunch doesn't guarantee a room. Ask when you book whether you can leave your bags on the afternoon you arrive, and you won't be dragging suitcases up an icy hill. If you're still choosing where to stay, weigh walking distance to dinner as heavily as distance to the slopes. Whether night one is easy or a struggle comes down almost entirely to where your hotel is. The different bases are compared in Where should you stay in Niseko?

15:00 Pick up the rentals on the first afternoon

Spending the first afternoon on rentals protects the next morning. Niseko Sports lets pre-booked customers collect from 3pm the day before the rental starts at no extra charge, and stores rented skis and boards overnight for free at all its shops (Niseko Sports). Rhythm hands over pre-booked gear from 1pm the day before, and runs a free shuttle to the store for your first fitting from hotels in its pick-up zone (Rhythm). You still pay from day two. If you're renting the kids' jackets, pants or helmets from the same shop, collect them at the same time. Niseko Sports takes web bookings up to four days before the rental starts.

Measuring feet, trying boots, setting ski length and adjusting bindings for four people takes, in my estimate, one to two hours. Write down everyone's height, weight and foot size before you leave home and put them into the booking form. For the kids' boots, ask each child whether their toes or shins are pressing before you settle, and you're far less likely to lose the afternoon of day two to "my feet hurt." 17:00 Wash off the journey in an onsen

One hotel in Hirafu that takes day bathers is Yumoto Niseko Prince Hotel Hirafutei. Day bathing runs 13:30–23:00 (last entry 22:00) at ¥1,200 per adult and ¥600 per child (age 4 through primary school). From 12 December 2026 to 14 March 2027 it rises to ¥3,000 and ¥1,500, so ¥9,000 for a family of four. Towels are ¥200 each to rent (Hirafutei).

After a long flight, kids get light-headed in hot water sooner than you'd think. On day one, 20 to 30 minutes is plenty: out, a glass of water, and on to dinner. For other day-visit onsen, or the bath nearest your hotel, find an onsen for your first day on Machinavi with the locations on a map. 18:30 Book dinner somewhere you can walk to

In peak-season Hirafu, finding a table for four without a booking is a heavy job for a family that has just arrived. Book one restaurant within walking distance of your hotel before the trip, and night one is covered. You can choose by location with restaurants near your hotel on Machinavi. If you're counting on a taxi, plan to wait. The Kutchan Tourism Association (as of January 2026) says waits of over an hour at peak times are common. In 2025-26 the GO app ran from 16 December to 15 March, took no advance bookings, and added a ¥1,180 regional transport fee plus a ¥100 app fee to the normal fare. DiDi and Uber also work, but many taxi companies only answer the phone in Japanese, so asking your front desk is the quickest route (Kutchan Tourism Association).

Within Hirafu there's also a free loop bus (1 December to 31 March in 2025-26, Kutchan Tourism Association). The free Kutchan Night Bus into town exists too (in 2025-26, 1 December to 31 March, 17:00–22:30, timetable), but save it for day two or later rather than the night the kids are worn out. What if you land at a different time?

The White Liner's last bus leaves the airport at 15:45, so on an international flight you need to be on the ground by about 14:15. Later than that, it's the Hokkaido Resort Liner (last departure 19:40 from the international terminal, from 7 December) or a taxi or private transfer to your door. If you'll reach Hirafu after dark, push rentals and the onsen to the morning of day two and keep dinner simple, near the hotel or in your room. Set the rental pickup for the morning of day two when you book.

What day one costs (family of four)

The bus is ¥20,400 one way booked online (¥24,000 by phone or at the counter), Hirafutei is ¥9,000 in January, and four towels add ¥800. Collecting rentals the day before costs nothing extra and there's no lift pass to buy, so outside of meals it comes to ¥30,200 (¥29,000 with an October web booking). From day two, lift passes and rental fees are added on top every day.

FAQ

Can we ski with the kids on the day we arrive in Niseko?

Landing internationally at 9am, the bus gets you into Hirafu around 13:15. Rental pickup for four is worth allowing one to two hours for (my own estimate), so it's easier to ski as a family from day two and spend day one on rentals, an onsen and dinner.

How long is the bus from New Chitose to Hirafu?

In 2026-27, the White Liner takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, and the Hokkaido Resort Liner about 2 hours 45 minutes to Hirafu Parking Lot No. 1 (about 2 hours 30 minutes on buses that skip Rusutsu). Snowy days take longer.

Should we pick up rentals on the day we arrive?

With a booking, Niseko Sports hands over gear from 3pm the day before and Rhythm from 1pm the day before, at no extra charge. Do it on arrival day and on day two you go straight from the hotel to the gondola.

Is it easy to get a taxi in Niseko?

At peak times in winter, waits of over an hour are common (Kutchan Tourism Association, as of January 2026). If your dinner time is fixed, ask your front desk to book one early.
