What to Do in Niseko If You're Not Skiing: Snowshoes, Snowmobiles, Onsen and More (Winter 2026-27)
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/10/03

Short answer first. You're very unlikely to get bored in a Niseko winter, even if you never put on skis. Snowshoeing, snowmobiles, snow tubing, a zipline, onsen, wandering around Kutchan town. If someone in your group doesn't ski, they can absolutely come along. Just know that most snow activities are bookable tours, and some get cancelled in bad weather.
- Play in the snow: snowshoeing, snowmobiles, snow rafting, snow tubing, a zipline
- Warm up: onsen — plenty take day visitors
- Head into town: eat your way around Kutchan, browse supermarkets for snacks and souvenirs
- Go further: take JR towards Otaru
- Watch out for: many tours need booking, and blizzards can cancel them
Can you enjoy Niseko if you don't ski?
Yes. Niseko United's official site even has a page of winter activities for non-skiers (Niseko United).
It's very common for a family or group to include someone who doesn't ski. The skiers head up the mountain, the non-skiers do their own thing, and everyone meets at an onsen in the late afternoon. In my view, that's the most peaceful way to do it.
Playing in the snow: activities that aren't skiing
Snowshoeing
Strap on snowshoes and walk through the forest on a guided tour. Tours run at Hirafu, Hanazono and Niseko Village, among others.
You don't need to be sporty. Just walking slowly, you'll see a quiet side of Niseko that's nothing like the ski slopes. If someone isn't skiing, this is what I'd suggest first.
Snowmobiles
Think of a motorbike for snow. Hanazono and Niseko Village run tours, and no experience is needed (Niseko United). Hanazono also has evening tours.
Snow rafting
Ride in a raft towed across the snow by a snowmobile. You can try it at Hanazono and Niseko Village. Fun for kids and adults alike.
Snow tubing (Hanazono Tube Park)
Slide down snowy slopes on an inflatable tube. Open to ages 3 and up, and lit up in colour at night (Niseko United).
With little kids, this might be the biggest hit of the trip.
Zipline (Hanazono Zipflight)
Clip onto a wire and fly down above the ski runs — 1,700m of it. Non-skiers get the mountain views too.
Warming up in an onsen
Niseko has a lot of hot springs. Many take day visitors, and some hotel onsen are open to non-guests.
One onsen in the afternoon, another in the evening — on a non-ski day, you can do exactly that.
If you're not sure where to go, see 14 Recommended Hot Springs in Niseko.
Heading into Kutchan town
Kutchan, a short way from Hirafu, is where locals actually live.
- Ramen, set meals, izakaya — the places locals go every day
- Supermarkets and drugstores, good for Japanese snacks and souvenirs
- On winter nights, there's a free bus between Kutchan and Hirafu
How to get around is in Getting Around Niseko Without a Car.
Going a little further: towards Otaru
From Kutchan Station, the JR Hakodate Line heads towards Otaru, a town known for its canal and old streets.
In winter, though, snow can delay or stop trains. Leave plenty of time for the trip back, and check the forecast before you go.
Tips for a good non-ski day
- Book tours ahead. Especially over New Year and Lunar New Year (around 6 February in 2027)
- Weather can cancel things. Blizzards can mean cancellations or changed times. A spare day in your plans helps
- Dress as warmly as the skiers. Non-skiers can spend longer standing around outside. Waterproof boots and gloves are a must
- Agree on a meeting spot. On days you split up, meeting at an onsen or café makes things easy
A local tip: the coldest part of a non-skier's day is waiting at the bottom of the slopes. Don't wait — plan one thing of your own. One snowshoe tour or one onsen changes what you remember about that day.
