Niseko in November: Is There Snow, and What's Open?

Kutchan gets 95cm of snowfall in an average November. There is snow, but it keeps settling and melting, the ski resorts don't start turning until the end of the month at the earliest, and most of Hirafu's shops are still shut.

Niseko United's 2026–27 lift passes are priced from 28 November, and the snow decides when, and which runs, actually open. For food and supplies, Kutchan town runs as normal (What's open in Kutchan?). It's too early to come for the skiing, but if you want to see Niseko with nobody in it, this is the month.

What Niseko is like in November

Quiet. In Hirafu, most of what you hear is construction. Locals swap to winter tyres and watch the snowline on Mt Yotei drop a little lower each week.

This is also when winter workers start arriving in town. House-hunting and hiring are busier now than at any other time of year.

Every year it goes like this: the first snow falls, everyone gets excited, it melts, everyone's disappointed. Two or three rounds of that, and then winter finally comes.

November weather and snow

Kutchan's November normals: average 2.9°C, overnight lows of -1.0°C, 95cm of snowfall in total and a maximum depth of 36cm (JMA).

Snow settles and melts, so the roads are often icy in the morning. If you're driving, winter tyres are a must. Renting a car? Check it comes with winter tyres when you book.

When do the ski resorts open?

Niseko United's 2026–27 lift passes are priced from 28 November (Niseko United). The actual opening, and which runs open, depends on snow. From late November into early December, often only some runs are open.

For choosing dates, see The Best Time to Visit Niseko.

If you come in November

  • Onsen: baths that are packed all winter are quiet now
  • Kutchan town: izakaya and set-meal restaurants are open as usual
  • Mt Yotei: watching it turn white from the summit down is the view of the season
  • Plan ahead: a good time to scout winter accommodation or lock in bookings for December onwards

Many places in Hirafu are closed, so eat in Kutchan town or at your accommodation. Check opening hours before you head out. For days when you can't ski, see What can you do in Niseko if you're not skiing?
