DAY 06

Time and '〜 from 〜 until' — Describe your shift

Why this matters

In a Niseko lodge or restaurant, your first week will be a blur of shift times. 'What time does your shift start?' 'Who's on from 4 to 10 tonight?' If you can read a schedule board and say your own hours back cleanly, you earn trust in week one.

01

Today's goals

  • ✓時刻を正しく読める(4時/7時/9時の不規則も)
  • ✓『〜から〜まで』で時間の範囲を言える
  • ✓『〜時に』で予定の時点を言える
  • ✓シフト・休憩・開始時刻を聞ける/答えられる
02

How it works

Telling time uses the suffix 〜 時 (じ) for hours and 〜 分 (ふん / ぷん) for minutes.

  • ·1時 いちじ / 2時 にじ / 3時 さんじ / 4時 よじ / 5時 ごじ / 6時 ろくじ / 7時 しちじ / 8時 はちじ / 9時 くじ / 10時 じゅうじ
  • ·Half past: 〜 時 半 (はん). 7時半 (しちじはん) = 7:30.
  • ·Morning / afternoon: 午前 (ごぜん) = AM, 午後 (ごご) = PM.

'What time?' is 何時 (なんじ) ですか.

Range: 〜 から 〜 まで — from 〜 until 〜.

  • ·シフト は 9時 から 5時 まで です。 — My shift is from 9 to 5.
  • ·朝ごはん は 7時 から 10時 まで です。 — Breakfast is from 7 to 10.

'At what time' is 〜 時 に. The particle に marks a specific point in time.

  • ·8時 に スタート します。 — Start at 8.
  • ·10時 に 休憩 です。 — Break at 10.

In a Niseko staff room, three sentences do most of the heavy lifting:

  • ·今日 の シフト は 何時 から 何時 まで です か。 — What are my hours today?
  • ·休憩 は 何時 です か。 — When's the break?
  • ·明日 は 休み です。 — I'm off tomorrow.

Common pitfalls

Saying よんじ or きゅうじ for 4時 / 9時
CAUSE They follow the regular よん / きゅう pattern you learned for counting
FIX Time breaks the pattern. 4時 = よじ, 7時 = しちじ, 9時 = くじ. Burn these three in by repeating 『よじ、しちじ、くじ』every time you look at a clock for a week.
Using を or で instead of に for 'at [time]'
CAUSE English prepositions don't map 1-to-1
FIX Specific point in time → に. 『8時に』『10時半に』『月曜日に』. Range → から / まで. If it's a single moment, it's に.
Confusing 午前 (AM) and 午後 (PM) when reading a schedule
CAUSE They look similar at a glance
FIX 午前 contains 前 'before (noon)'. 午後 contains 後 'after (noon)'. Niseko shifts are often written in 24-hour format on the board (16:00 = 4 PM) — if you see a number above 12, it's PM.
Forgetting the particle in 『シフトは9時から5時までです』
CAUSE English says 'from 9 to 5' with no equivalent of まで
FIX In Japanese, から and まで always come as a pair when stating a range. Drill the pair together, never apart.
Tomorrow

Tomorrow: days of the week, 'next week', and how to negotiate a day off.
