DAY 13

Phone basics — Moshi moshi, please hold

Why this matters

When the lodge phone rings in Niseko, you might be the one picking it up. A few words — moshi moshi, please hold — decide the lodge's first impression.

01

Today's goals

02

How it works

Phone Japanese has its own script. Memorize the frame and you'll survive any lodge call.

Opening (receiving):

— Hello, this is [lodge name].

- でございます is the super-polite form of です — reserved for customer-facing.

Asking the caller's name:

  • ·お名前をお願いします。 — May I have your name?
— Pardon me, who's calling?

Buying time to transfer:

  • ·少々お待ちください。 — One moment please.
— I'll pass you to the person in charge.

Closing:

— Thank you. Goodbye.

Important rule: on the phone, you cannot see nods or gestures. Use はい generously — every 1–2 sentences — to signal you're following. Silence makes the caller nervous.

05

Common pitfalls

Saying こんにちは to open the call
CAUSE Direct 'hello' instinct
FIX On the phone always もしもし + [lodge name] でございます. こんにちは on an incoming call sounds amateur.
Staying silent while the caller talks
CAUSE In English you don't interrupt
FIX In Japanese phone etiquette, はい every 1–2 sentences is the 'nod'. Silence makes the caller think the line dropped.
Using ちょっと待って to a customer
CAUSE Casual Japanese bleeding into customer-facing speech
FIX To customers always ちょっと待って is for friends only.
Tomorrow

Tomorrow: lending and returning gear — ワックス, keys, radios in the staff room.
