After a 12-hour shift at Hirafu, the first unwind is an izakaya. If you can order a cold beer, a bowl of ramen, and ask what the staff recommends — all in Japanese — you earn the local 'he's one of us' nod. 食べる and 飲む are the two verbs that open that whole world.

How it works
Two core verbs:
·食べる (たべる) — to eat → polite form 食べます (たべます)
·飲む (のむ) — to drink → polite form 飲みます (のみます)
The polite present/future takes 〜ます. The negative is 〜ません.
·ビールを飲みます。 — I drink beer. / I'll have a beer.
·肉を食べません。 — I don't eat meat.
Ordering patterns at the counter:
·〜 を ください — Please give me 〜. (Direct order; works everywhere.)
·〜 を おねがいします — Please. (Slightly softer than ください.)
·〜 と 〜 を ください — [A] and [B], please.
Expressing likes: 〜 が 好き (すき) です. Note the particle is が, not を.
·大 (だい) / 小 (しょう) — large / small (for ramen portions)
When the server comes with the first "いらっしゃいませ", a smooth 『生ビールを、ひとつおねがいします』 (one draft beer, please) earns a smile every time.

Common pitfalls
Using を with 好きです instead of が
CAUSE English 'like' takes a direct object
FIX 好きです works like an adjective ('is likable'), so the thing is marked with が. 『ラーメンが好きです』『北海道が好きです』『あなたが好きです』. Drill the pattern until を feels wrong.
Dropping ます at an izakaya ('ビール飲む' instead of 飲みます)
CAUSE Casual form slips out when the mood is friendly
FIX To a stranger (including izakaya staff you don't know), always use ます. The dictionary form (飲む/食べる) is for close friends or thinking aloud. In doubt → 〜ます.
Ordering with just the item name ('ビール!')
CAUSE English 'A beer!' or 'Beer!' feels fine at a bar
FIX Even casual izakaya expect a particle and a verb. Minimum: 『ビールを、ひとつ』 — item + を + quantity. Add おねがいします to make it polite.
Confusing 辛い (からい, spicy) and 甘い (あまい, sweet)
CAUSE Both are 2-syllable 〜い adjectives
FIX 辛 = pain (also the root of 辛い 'painful'). Spicy = painful heat. 甘 = sweetness, think of 甘えん坊 'sweet (spoiled) child'. Associate 辛い with your tongue burning.
Tomorrow
Tomorrow: cold and hot. 〜い adjectives for Niseko weather and gear.
