DAY 26

Talking about the past — '〜ました' and '〜でした'

Why this matters

The Monday-after-day-off question is universal: 『昨日、何しましたか』. Being able to answer naturally — 'I climbed Mt. Yōtei', 'I went to an onsen', 'I slept at home' — changes how people see you in the staff room.

01

Today's goals

  • ✓〜ます → 〜ました の過去形変換ができる
  • ✓〜です → 〜でした / 〜じゃありませんでした が言える
  • ✓昨日・先週・去年 の時点副詞を使える
  • ✓休みの日の3文スピーチが作れる
02

How it works

Verbs past tense: 〜ます → 〜ました

For polite-form verbs, just swap ます → ました. Negative is ません → ませんでした.

  • ·行きます → 行きました (ikimashita) / 行きませんでした
  • ·食べます → 食べました / 食べませんでした
  • ·します → しました / しませんでした

Nouns and な-adjectives: 〜です → 〜でした

  • ·休みです → 休みでした
  • ·きれいです → きれいでした (な-adjective)

い-adjectives are different

  • ·寒いです → 寒かったです
  • ·楽しいです → 楽しかったです
  • ·高いです → 高かったです

Never say 『寒いでした』. It's wrong. Drop the い, add かった.

Time words

  • ·昨日 (yesterday) / 先週 (last week) / 先月 (last month) / 去年 (last year)
  • ·2日前 (two days ago) / 3時間前 (three hours ago)

Niseko 'yesterday' three-line template

1. Place: 昨日、〜に行きました。 — Yesterday I went to 〜. 2. Action: 〜しました / 見ました / 食べました。 — I did / saw / ate 〜. 3. Reaction: 〜でした (寒かったです / 楽しかったです). — It was 〜.

Example: 『昨日、羊蹄山にのぼりました。頂上で雲海を見ました。すごく寒かったです。』 — 'Yesterday I climbed Mt. Yōtei. From the summit I saw a sea of clouds. It was really cold.'

Common pitfalls

Saying 寒いでした instead of 寒かったです
CAUSE You remember the 〜でした rule for です and apply it to everything
FIX い-adjectives have their own past rule. Drop い, add かった, keep です. 寒い → 寒かったです. Drill: 高い→高かったです, 楽しい→楽しかったです, いい→よかったです (irregular).
Forgetting the particle in 『昨日、温泉行きました』
CAUSE Spoken Japanese sometimes drops it, but tests mark it wrong
FIX Always include に for destination: 温泉『に』行きました. Dropping は after 昨日 is fine, but に after a location is near-mandatory.
Using 行きました for 'came to Japan'
CAUSE Confusing go and come
FIX 行く = go (away from here). 来る → 来ました = come (toward here). 'I came to Japan in October' = 10月に日本に来ました.
Tomorrow

Tomorrow: comparisons. Make 『スキーより、スノーボードのほうが好きです』 roll off your tongue.
