A Niseko season is short. If you can land "where are you from?" at the staff party, you'll spend the rest of the season with that person. If you can't, they stay just a face.
The small-talk core at any Niseko staff party has three questions and three answers:
— Your name? / I'm called ... 2. — Where are you from? / I'm from ... 3. — What are your hobbies? / My hobby is ...
Expand with 『あと』 and 『〜も』 to keep the exchange flowing:
Reflect with 『そうなんですね』 before adding your own detail. This single phrase makes the other person feel heard. English speakers often reply with raw "oh really?" which lands flat.
Avoid open-ended 'why'. 『どうしてニセコに来たんですか?』 can feel heavy at a first party. (how long have you been in Niseko?) instead — safer and still interesting.
hometown / origin
hobby
music
movies
sports
I see / is that so (acknowledging reply)
I'm from ... — stating origin.
My hobby is ... — introducing an interest.
Chatting with a first-time coworker at a staff party
Translate: 'Where are you from?'
A coworker just told you something interesting. What should you say before adding your own?
Make a sentence:
At a staff party, introduce yourself with name, hometown, and one hobby in 3 lines.
Tomorrow: likes, dislikes, strengths — talking about yourself a little deeper.
