DAY 18

Likes, dislikes, strengths — Talking about yourself deeper

Why this matters

'I like snowboarding and sushi' only takes you so far. 'I prefer snowboarding over skiing' and 'I love sushi but wasabi isn't my thing' is what turns small talk into a real conversation.

01

Today's goals

  • ✓〜が好きです/きらいです で好き嫌いを言える
  • ✓〜が得意です/苦手です で得手不得手を言える
  • ✓〜より〜のほうが好きです で比較できる
  • ✓好き嫌いの話を5往復続けられる
02

How it works

Four small patterns unlock a lot of personal talk:

  • ·〜が好きです — I like ... (sushi, snowboarding, movies ...)
  • ·〜がきらいです — I dislike ... (strong; most speakers soften to 苦手 for food/people)
  • ·〜が得意です — I'm good at ... (skill)
  • ·〜が苦手です — I'm not good at ... (softer than きらい)

Key: the subject particle is が, not を. 寿司が好きです is correct; 寿司を好きです is wrong — because 好き is actually an adjective, not a verb.

Comparing two things:

  • ·〜より、〜のほうが好きです。 — I like B more than A.
  • ·スキーより、スノーボードのほうが好きです。 — I like snowboarding more than skiing.

Softening dislikes: direct きらい sounds harsh. For food, people, or weather, use 苦手 instead:

  • ·わさびは、苦手です。 — Wasabi isn't my thing. (polite, warm)

The は after わさび is the "contrast particle" — it signals "I like sushi, but when it comes to wasabi specifically..." It softens the dislike by implying you like other things in the category.

05

Common pitfalls

Using を instead of が with 好き
CAUSE English 'like' is a verb, so を feels right
FIX 好き is grammatically an adjective. The subject particle is が. 寿司が好きです — always が.
Saying きらい about food or people
CAUSE きらい is in the vocab list and feels neutral
FIX To an actual person きらい is strong. For food and people, 苦手 is the warm default. Save きらい for strong principles ('I hate lying').
Dropping は in 『わさびは、苦手です』
CAUSE You hear the sentence as plain 'I'm not good at wasabi'
FIX The は signals contrast — 'other things are fine, but wasabi is...'. Without it, the dislike sounds absolute.
Tomorrow

Tomorrow: festivals and events — accepting or declining an invitation to the Hirafu matsuri.
