On a cold morning at Hirafu base, you need to say what you want fast: a 1-day ticket, boot size 27, a bigger beanie. '〜 が ほしい です' and '〜 を ください' are the two patterns that do 90% of that work.
01
Today's goals
✓『〜がほしいです』で自分の欲しいものを言える(助詞 が に注意)
✓『〜をください/〜をおねがいします』でカウンターで注文できる
✓レンタル用語(スキー・ボード・ブーツ・ヘルメット・ゴーグル・サイズ)を使える
✓『サイズは27です』『もうひとつ上をおねがいします』『返却は何時ですか』で貸出手続きができる
02
How it works
Two patterns for 'I want X':
1. 〜 が ほしい です — I want 〜. (Expressing desire. Note the particle is が, not を.) - 1日券 が ほしい です。 — I want a 1-day pass. - あたたかい 手袋 が ほしい です。 — I want warm gloves.
2. 〜 を ください — Please give me 〜. (Direct request for an item at a counter.) - 1日券 を ください。 — A 1-day pass, please. - レンタル を ください。 — The rental, please.
Which to use?
·Talking to a friend or planning: ほしいです (expressing a wish).
·At a counter actually buying: ください or おねがいします (ordering).
·返却 は 何時 です か。 — What time is the return deadline?

Common pitfalls
Using を with ほしい instead of が
CAUSE English 'want' takes a direct object; を is the Japanese 'direct object' particle
FIX ほしい is grammatically an adjective, not a verb. The thing you want is marked with が. Repeat 『1日券がほしい』『コーヒーがほしい』『あたたかい部屋がほしい』until it feels wrong to say を.
Saying 『ほしい』 to a stranger at a counter
CAUSE ほしい sounds unfiltered, like 'I want'
FIX At a counter, upgrade to ください or おねがいします. ほしい belongs to conversations with friends or when planning aloud.
Mishearing boot sizes
CAUSE 27 (にじゅうなな) and 28 (にじゅうはち) overlap in sound
FIX Write your size on your phone screen and show it. Written numbers always win over spoken numbers at the rental counter.
