6 Common Niseko Complaints and How to Shrink Them [2026-27]

It's expensive, it's crowded, and you can't get a table for dinner. Add "you can't get around", "the weather" and "it doesn't feel like Japan" and you have the six complaints people make about Niseko, and five of them shrink a lot once you shift your dates or where you stay, and book dinner the same day you book your room.

The complaints cluster in Hirafu between January and early February. In Kutchan, the town Hirafu belongs to, foreign guest-nights in fiscal 2025 were about 147,000 in December, but about 234,000 in January and about 206,000 in February, the month of Lunar New Year (Kutchan Town tourism statistics). By country and region, Hong Kong is one of the biggest sources, with about 100,000 guest-nights over fiscal 2025 as a whole. "Expensive": fix it with dates and lift passes

Dates are the biggest lever. For 2026-27, Niseko United's peak period runs 24 December to 28 February, and a 5-day adult All-Mountain Pass costs ¥65,500. In the regular period (1 to 22 March) it's ¥61,000, and in the spring period (23 March to 4 April) it's ¥42,700 (Niseko United). For four friends skiing five days, peak versus spring is a ¥91,200 difference. On Hong Kong's calendar, Easter Monday 2027 falls on 29 March (Labour Department), so that long weekend lands inside spring pricing.

How you buy matters too. The All-Mountain Pass is about 5% cheaper on average online, but online passes can't be refunded, even for illness or weather (Niseko United). As of 5 October, 2026-27 online sales were listed as "preparing for sale". If you're staying in Hirafu or Hanazono and skiing mostly there, the Hirafu-Hanazono Pass, valid at those two resorts, is enough. Accommodation prices also move a lot with the calendar: the same room can cost very different amounts a week apart. From stays on or after 1 April 2026, Kutchan charges an accommodation tax of 3% of the room rate (Kutchan Town). Pick two candidate weeks and compare room prices side by side by date, and you'll see in numbers how much a different week saves.

"Crowded": move the clock, not the day

January in Hirafu is busy on weekdays too, so dodge the crowds by time rather than day. Grand Hirafu's lifts run 8:30am to 4:30pm in 2026-27 (Niseko United). People chasing fresh snow queue before the lifts start, so I'd be at the lift by 8:15, then eat lunch in the 11 o'clock hour or after 1pm. You can also swap mountains for a day. In 2025-26, Rusutsu Resort's day-trip bus ran 3 January to 28 February, leaving Hirafu Welcome Centre at 8:30am, for ¥9,000 return, booked online by 3pm the day before (Rusutsu Resort). As of 5 October, the 2026-27 service hadn't been announced. Niseko passes don't work at Rusutsu, so buy that day's ticket separately. Moiwa, on the Niseko Town side, is also a separate ski area from Niseko United, with its own passes.

"No table": book dinner the same day as your room

In Hirafu, evenings without a booking tend to turn into a walk from door to door. Of the 27 Hirafu restaurants listed on Niseko Hub's Machinavi, 7 are marked "reservation required", while none of the 87 listed in central Kutchan are (our count as of 5 October 2026). The week you lock in your accommodation, book your most important night first. If booking by phone feels daunting, your front desk can call for you.

Many restaurants charge for late cancellations, and one dining guide puts it at around ¥3,000 per person (Powderlife, updated 2021). If your group size might change, check the deadline when you book. On nights you miss out, walk in during the 5pm hour, head down to Kutchan, or, if you have a kitchen, plan a night in. "Can't get around": plan from the last bus home

Inside Hirafu there's a free loop bus, and the free Kutchan Night Bus links Hirafu with Kutchan town. In 2025-26 the Night Bus ran daily from 1 December to 31 March, 5pm to 10:30pm (Kutchan Tourism Association timetable PDF). From 20 December to 28 February, one direct bus a day was added, leaving Hirafu Welcome Centre at 5:30pm for Kutchan Station, with no direct bus back (Kutchan Tourism Association). From Kutchan Station to Hirafu, the bus after 6:30pm was 8:15pm, and the last one left at 9:45pm. The 2025-26 version was published on 25 November 2025, so check the 2026-27 timetable once it's out.

Taxis are the weak spot. Niseko HANAZONO Resort warns that in busy periods you can wait over an hour, and the GO, Uber and DiDi apps all work (Niseko HANAZONO Resort). The reliable move is to book your ride home when you book the restaurant. If you're not used to driving on snow, skip the rental car. "Weather": prepare for it instead

In Kutchan, the January normals are 253cm of snowfall and 47.0 hours of sunshine for the month, and the normal daily minimum temperature is -9.6°C (Japan Meteorological Agency). With that much snow, clear days with Mt Yotei in view are few, and on windy days the upper lifts can stop. "Not Japanese enough": step outside for half a day

In winter 2025-26 (November to April), Kutchan recorded 764,641 foreign guest-nights and 107,415 Japanese guest-nights (Kutchan Town). English comes first in Hirafu because shops and lodges grew up to welcome those guests, and that's also why Hirafu is so easy. If you want everyday Japan, step out for half a day. Kiranoyu, a town day-onsen one minute's walk from JR Niseko Station, is open 10am to 9:30pm and costs ¥800 for adults (revised 1 July 2026, for non-residents of Niseko Town). It closes on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, except August to October, when it opens daily (Kiranoyu). A local tip: of the six, the weather is the only one you truly can't avoid. A bad-weather day in Niseko is a day it's snowing. That snow is what you came for, so on the morning after, get up early.

How do I avoid the crowds in Niseko?

Skip the New Year and Lunar New Year weeks, and come in March if you can. If you're coming in January, be at the lift for the 8:30 start and eat lunch in the 11 o'clock hour or after 1pm.
