Do I need a car in Niseko during the winter? Are snow tires essential?

I'll be staying in Niseko during the winter. I'd like to know if it's better to have a car, and if so, what kind of tires I should get if I do drive my own car.

    You can live without a car. Niseko Bus, Donan Bus, and shuttle buses connect the resorts, and Hirafu, the area around Kutchan Station, and each ski resort are all connected by bus. However, having a car is convenient for shopping and getting around the surrounding areas. Rental cars come standard with winter tires (studded tires) during the winter season, so no additional arrangements are necessary. If you come by private car, studded tires are essential in Hokkaido from around November to April (driving on snowy roads with summer tires is extremely dangerous and practically impossible). If you are unfamiliar with driving on snowy roads, please consider using buses or taxis instead.
