Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/05/19
Your trip to Niseko begins the moment you land at New Chitose Airport. But the airport is farther from Niseko than you might think.
The straight-line distance is about 100 km. Allow two to three hours for the journey, and you'll travel with peace of mind.
This guide walks through the main ways to get from the airport to Niseko, one by one. You're sure to find the option that suits your style of travel.
Four main ways to get there
Each has its strengths.
Direct shuttle bus
In the winter season, reservation-only shuttle buses run directly between the airport and the Niseko area. No transfers, and easy even with ski gear. For first-timers, this is the most reassuring option.
Train (JR)
Travelling by JR, with transfers, toward Kutchan Station or Niseko Station. It takes longer and requires changes, but you'll enjoy the snowy scenery from the window.
Rental car
For those who want to move freely. Just remember that winter Niseko means snowy roads. If you're not used to driving on snow, don't push yourself.
Taxi / shared hire car
An option once a few people travel together. Handy when you have a lot of luggage, or for late-night and early-morning arrivals.
Book early — it's the best policy
Winter Niseko is peak season, with visitors from all over the world. Shuttle buses and rental cars can be fully booked if you leave it late.
As soon as your travel dates are set, reserve as early as you can. For the high season from Christmas through February especially, give yourself plenty of lead time.
On winter roads, leave room in your schedule
On snowy or stormy days, the journey can take longer than planned. Depending on road conditions, buses and trains may run late.
Try not to pack important plans into your arrival day. A relaxed schedule will set your mind at ease.
After you arrive in Niseko
For getting around the area, local buses and taxis are available.
Niseko Hub's "Machinavi" gathers information on the area's taxi companies and other transport useful for daily life. Once you arrive, check Machinavi for how to get around.
At the end of a long journey, a town of snow is waiting. Travel safely — we'll see you there.
