A Family Guide to Summer in Niseko — A Day Out with Kids
Niseko Hub Editorial Team · 2026/05/31

Summer in Niseko is a place we especially recommend for families with young children.
A cool, comfortable climate, wide-open nature right in front of you, and facilities that welcome little ones. Niseko has a strong winter image, but summer is a season that's perfect for a family trip — easy to plan around a child's pace. In this guide, we've gathered everything from summer activities even small children can enjoy, to good spots for a break, what to do on a rainy day, and a sample one-day plan — all from a parent's point of view.
Why summer in Niseko is great for families
First of all, summer in Niseko is cool.
Through the green season (roughly July to October), the temperature rarely climbs above 30°C. Without the muggy heat of a mainland Japanese summer, even little ones can enjoy a full day without wearing out.
Compared with the winter crowds, summer is relaxed. There's less waiting, and less chance of a child melting down in a queue.
Farms, roadside stations, and other spots with nursing rooms and kids' areas are dotted around — reassuring for families.
Summer activities even small children can enjoy
You might think, "Our child is still too little for activities." But Niseko has courses made just for small children.
Water play — family rafting & SUP
In summer, the Shiribetsu River runs as a gentle "summer course."
Depending on the operator, there are family rafting tours that children can join from around age 3 (some from age 2). Splash around and take in the scenery on this clear river — it's perfect for a first taste of river play.
* The minimum age varies by tour company. To be safe, check each company's official website before booking to confirm your child can take part.
Stroll the summit on the summer gondola
Even for very small children who can't hike yet, a gondola makes the views at the top easy to enjoy.
In summer, gondolas run in the Annupuri, Grand Hirafu, and Hanazono areas (usually from around July; please check official websites for operating dates and fares).
The Annupuri gondola, for example, reaches the summit station at 1,000 m in about 10 minutes, with views of Mt. Yotei and Lake Toya. As a guide, a round trip is about ¥1,600 for adults and ¥800 for elementary-school children, and free for preschoolers.
At the top of Grand Hirafu, there are free play areas with a trampoline and grass sledding for kids, so the whole family can relax.
A gentle float — hot-air balloon
In the Higashiyama area of Niseko Town, you can try an early-morning hot-air balloon ride.
Rising slowly up from the ground is an unforgettable memory for a child. There may be age or height requirements, so check in advance here, too.
Eat and rest — the farm and a sweet break
After all that play, take a break with something delicious.
The Takahashi Dairy Farm "Niseko Milk Kobo" in Niseko Town is a popular family stop. With Mt. Yotei in view, you can enjoy soft-serve ice cream and sweets made from fresh milk.
The restaurant has a kids' area, and the facilities are family-friendly — a diaper-changing table, a nursing room, and children's tableware and chairs to borrow.
The nearby "Roadside Station Niseko View Plaza" is handy for a rest, too, with local vegetables and Milk Kobo's soft-serve.
For rainy days, or a slower day
Mountain weather in summer changes quickly. For rainy days, or when your child is tired, it helps to know some indoor spots.
- A relaxed snack time at the farm's workshop or café.
- Shopping and a rest at the roadside station.
- A family soak at an onsen. * Some facilities don't admit children who aren't yet toilet-trained, so check beforehand.
Not over-packing the schedule — and being able to switch to "let's take it easy today" — is one of the secrets of a family trip.
A sample summer day with the family
Here's a gentle sample flow for when you're not sure where to start.
- Morning: ride the summer gondola for a summit stroll while it's cool; play on the trampoline and grass sleds.
- Midday: lunch and soft-serve at Takahashi Dairy Farm; rest in the kids' area.
- Afternoon: family rafting on the Shiribetsu River, or relax at the roadside station.
- Evening: soothe the day's tiredness at an onsen, and goodnight.
Cool mornings, active middays, easy afternoons. Feel free to rearrange it to match your child's pace.
